Description
Great Beer Above All Else

Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.

Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Can. Rapidly diminishing frothy, white head. Clear golden body. The aroma has notes of toasted grain, soap, herbs, earthiness, clove and pepper with hints of grass, lemon, perfume and pepper. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly bitter with a light to moderate acidity. Medium body, oily texture turning sticky and fizzy/lively carbonation. The aroma, while not overpowering, hints at complexity, but the sweet taste with too much soapiness and too much spice is disappointing. Just OK.

Can. Clear amber body with frothy, off-white head, mostly diminishing. Moderate aroma of caramel, toasted grain, herbs, earthiness. The flavor is lightly bitter and lightly sweet. It finishes lightly to moderately bitter and lightly sweet. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Dry, bitter finish. Muted caramel for an ESB. Instead, the taste is dominated by grain. Less refined than classic bitters. That aside, flavorful for a 4% beer. Easy drinking.

Bomber from Guerde. Much appreciated. Pours black/brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is strongly coffee and smokey. Full bodied; mild carbonation. Smooth, lightly sweet chocolate and heavy coffee. Could be vanilla. Smoke lurks throughout. Finishes smooth, burnt malt, coffee, etc. Very good stuff.

Can from Guerde. Thanks guy! Depending how it’s held, it poured amber, copper or ruddy copper. The head was substantial and foamy. The hop aroma could anesthetize a pachyderm. The flavor starts resin, goes floral and permits a little malt to seep out. The finish is harshly, scratch that, abrasively bitter. Damn it’s good.

Dark brown liquid that really appears to be a deep magenta when held up to the light. The beige head leaves excellent lacing. Nutty and malty with a slight metallic tinge. I don’t know if this some kind of deep-seated subconscious suspicion of canning, but there’s a note in there that doesn’t quite work perfectly. There are hops, good clean malt and an appropriate level of nuttiness. There are also subtle notes of chocolate and roast. Good feel. Easy to drink brown ale.

Medium amber liquid with a puffy white head that dissipates to a fine but uneven pattern of lacing. Sweet and doughy. Some hop character that I can’t quite place. Good lager flavor. Fresh grains and dry yeast. Some sweet breadiness. Mild rye flavor. Some nice bitterness in the finish. It’s a good beer with a good lager flavor, but it’s not as complex as I was somehow expecting. I would prefer it have a crisper bite.

Thanks to cloudskipper. Quite good, though my expectations were a bit high and it didn’t quite live up. It’s a creamy beer, lots of dark roast, lots of coffee. The aroma blends coffee, chocolate, roast nicely, though I’d say coffee dominates, in a good way. Flavor is heavy on the iced coffee. Would have liked some more of the cocoa to show up on the palate.

Nice big smoke nose and flavor. A little peppery hot and rough through the finish.
