Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Sampled from the bottle at the 2010 March Metro Detroit Tasting. Poured black with a small brown head. Aroma was full of sweeter notes with milk chocolate, dark fruits and caramel/toffee shining through. There was a slight undertone of coffee on the nose. Flavor began with many of the sweet notes listed above with a finish full of roasted malts and coffee.

Bottle, 22oz 2009 vintage, from trade with Akevitt. Thx a bunch! It’s a pitch black beer topped by a quite small but lasting tan head leaving lacings. Salt and molasses, chocolate and coffee, licorice and soy, and quite evident hops on the nose. Plain lovely. The flavor is pretty much the same, all the dark flavors imaginable, super smooth on the palate, and with delicious piney hops adding bitterness. Oily and full-bodied. Quite bitter finish, but far from overpowering. It would be decadent to drink a bottle, but I bet I would love that hour of satisfaction. It’s a wonderful, complex and tasteful beer. 091106

2009 bottle from Matt (madvike). Deep opaque brown-black body, thick tan head. Caramely nose, dusty and crackery, with stale bread, heavy roast, chocolate, molasses, and soy. The body was quite sweet, but felt unbalanced, with big chocolate, licorice, and honey-like molasses notes, sugary, with dark fruit, coffee, and distracting toasty cereals that lent a soggy, wavering homebrew quality to the malt profile. Some citrus and pine hops. Overall, this beer was marred by oxidized sugars, and lacked enough roast or warming alcohol to firm up the palate. After sampling the wonderfully executed, but relatively unadventurous Cigar City Marshal Zhukov’s IS, this beer struck me as messy, a tad cloying, and not very deep.

Draft @ Cafe 28. Pours a very dark brown, near black color with a finger of creamy brown head. Nose is roasty and somewhat burnt malts with a heavy espresso element, yet hints at sweetness. The taste is very rich in roast, espresso, dark chocolate, and faint burnt malts. Just a little bit of that smokiness. Very rich and creamy. As an espresso fan I really liked this flavor infusion. Subtle, but rich. Not to mention the swirling pattern of brown lacing formed this really cool picture that I swear looked like the grim reaper from a prior Darkness bottle... Very cool.

Can pours out a brown with some red highs topped with a tan head. Aroma is of sweet caramel malts, and a nice hop presents. Taste is more of the malts a little nut along with some bitter hops kick.

Small brown head. Dark red body. Intense rich coffee grounds aroma, but little beyond that, except perhaps some dark chocolate. Dry dark chocolate and coffee grounds taste with beery fruity notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Clean and clear taste. Dry wooden coffee aftertaste with rye notes. Funny, but perhaps a small sample is enough. (0.5l can shared by gr0ve.)

Winterfest 2010. I was disappointed they decided to do a coffee bee for Four , as they already have Coffee Bender, and that is a great beer already. Coffee aroma. Dark brown color. Flavor has coffee, but not as much as coffee bender. Smooth, and an slicky, oily texture. Some alcohol in this one. Lightly sweet malt, and it is well balanced, and of course well made.

Canned, thanks Cletus! Hazy dark amber, small head. Lychee aroma. Mid-sweet with medium body and vital, rounded mouthfeel. Juicy flavour where gooseberry, lychee and winegums dominates. Grapfruity bitter finish. Very aromatic, very good.

On tap at Stub & Herbs. Poured an amber brown with minimal head. Aroma was full of grain notes with a bit of toast and nuttiness. Flavor was very malty as well with a strong toasted flavor with a hint of chocolate and just a touch of hops.
