Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

750ml bottle (Bottle 036) from hellomynameis, Nose is not as prominent as some other impys, all the flavors there, but not as strong; Aroma of chocolate, toffee, licorice, light smokiness and roastiness; Black with lighter clear brown edges and a big cinnamon tan head which laces the glass very heavily and stays around as you imbibe; flavor of chocolate, oaty grains, coffee, caramel, and some hop bitterness; finish is light hop bitterness and some alcohol warmth.

Courtesy of Quake1028. Pours clear deep gold with copper core and weak off white head. The aroma is pretty big to start with sweet malts mixed with lemon, candi sugar, peach, sweet apples and some mild earthiness. The taste is nice and fresh with both sweet and tart notes coming from such things as candi sugar, tart lemon, apples and mild yeast spices. Seems to end with a tasty mild malt roastiness.

Very dark brown and almost free of carbonation. Fruit and malt aroma, but the malt is dry rather than thick. This beer is fairly dry overall. Flavor has good, sour fruit, and it does seem like natural fruit and no artificial flavoring. Not sweet at all, but interesting palate that is kind of heavy.

Can, 5.1%. Thanks, yespr. Roasted and creamy aroma. Very dark brown colour, seems clear. Unstable tan head. Thin to medium mouthfeel, but with a little creamy carbonation. Roasted flavour, OK dark malts. Hint of nice, fresh, grassy aroma hops. Low bitterness. Not complex, but nice and drinkable.

Can, 6.5%. Thanks, yespr. Weak caramelly aroma with a little rag. Hazy greyish copper colour. Small head. The flavour has a little cardboard and some roughness from either the alcohol or the hops. Gets more fruity as it warms. Good mouthfeel. Tastes of more than its ABV.

Can, 6.2%. Thanks, yespr. Powerful hop aroma, very nice, fat, teaish and caramelly. Almost clear dark brown colour. Small tan head. The flavour is quite bitter, turning into a good hop flavour and then back to bitter. The bitterness is clean and pleasant and the hop flavour quite teaish. Good maltiness to balance the hops. 9 3 9 3 18
Can, 6.6%. Good grassy hop aroma. Clear dark amber colour. Small stable off-white head. The flavour is nicely grassy with a good bitterness to balance the slight sweetness. Flavourful and well-balanced. 8 3 8 3 15

Can. An orange beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with primary notes of grapefruit, while the flavor is sweet with strongest notes of grapefruit, but also notes of malt and caramel. Much more like an IPA, than an Oktoberfest - maybe a Minnesota Oktoberfest ;-) Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

I thought it was like a bitter, and a good one. Light red in color and very low carbonation. The aroma is simple malt. The flavor has abundant malt as well, and has a lightly roasted flavor to it. Good palate and fairly full bodied for a beer that is in no way complex. Very drinkable, like a mild or bitter should be.

(Can 47,5 cl) Courtesy of Skyview. Slightly hazy, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head. Very fresh and piney aroma. Medium body with light caramel accents and otherwise completely dominated by the very dry, piney aroma hoppiness. Distinctly bitter finish. Excellent, but in style very far from an Oktoberfest! If this was served in the beer halls of Munich, the poor local beerdrinkers would never what hit them... 110108

47.5 cL can. Pours hazy orange with a diminished white head. Aroma is slight spiced, solid floral hoppy aroma. Flavour is medium sweet and solid fruity towards fresh fruity hoppy. Ends very fresh fruity. Nice ipa by all means, but this ha very little to do with a classic Octoberfestbier.
