Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een donkerbruin tot zwart bier met een licht bruin schuim. Het heeft een chocolade achtige geur. De smaak is koffie in het begin met chocolade in de nasmaak.

Winter beer by Zaandijk’s Hoop, a porter made with cocoa nibs. Thanks Craftmember for sharing. Irregular, thick, creamy, yellowish beige and slowly thinning head, leaving a greyish veil over the middle of a very dark chocolate brown robe with ruddy hue. Aroma of strong beef broth and boiled down gravy, hot ironed cloth, coffee grounds, charred meat and roasted chicory, bitter chocolate. Sweetish onset with light sourish undertone but strong, bit teriyaki-like umami effect too, softish carb, very creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Walnutty and caramelly malt profile with bitter-chocolatey edge, the latter of course accentuated by bittering-sweet cocoa nibs, though I find the overall cocoa / chocolate effect to be quite understated for a beer advertising itself as a chocolate porter. Some leafy hop bitterish and coffeeish roasted touches create pleasant end bitterness, though. Not as chocolatey as expected by far, too much umami, but the general profile indeed holds the middle between old-fashioned English winter warmer ales on the one hand and modern American chocolate and coffee porters on the other hand. Interesting, in all.
