Bottle at home from the Wine Society. A good pour with a reasonable head from the bottle conditioning. There was a certain spicy aroma to the beer that made me nervous. The flavour was plain unpleasant. There was a slightly sour and very intrusive farmyard flavour that really did nothing for me and it dominated the whole profile. Yuck! It was close to its BBD so that is one possible reason for the flavour, the other is it was made to taste like that which I find bizarre. I should have tipped it away, but I persevered and rewarded myself with a glass of Cotswold single malt which was much better.

Bottle from Blue Glass, Bedford. Dark brown, opaque, flat. Burnt malt, liquorice, coffe grounds and some blackberry in the aroma. Taste is sweet at first, but it turns into a lip-smacking bitterness near the finish. Ash, stone fruit and black coffee in the aftertaste. Body is way too weak, and there's almost no carbonation. All in all it's a decent if very traditional stout.

Bottle at Matteo’s Leaving drinks. Thanks to C&R. It pours opaque darkest brown with a small tan head. The aroma is toasty, bready malts, toasted sugar, candied peel, dried fruits and a bit of spice. The taste is soft, sweet, roasty, sugary, candied orange peel, wood, leather and a fair amount of festive spice. Medium body and fine carbonation. Fairly average spiced xmas action.

Bottle from the Blue Glass, Bedford. Golden and a trifle hazy with quite a bit of visible carbonation. Some nice tangerine notes along with a malty base in the aroma. There’s a harsh raw grain taste which is mollified by the sweet citrus notes around the edges of the flavour. Orange juice in the finish. Watery body. Not excellent but certainly refreshing.

Bottle from the Blue Glass, Bedford. Reddish-brown with a creamy off-white head. Low aroma: some caramelly-malty notes but that’s all. Taste is also malt led and one-dimensional, but there’s a nice hop balance in the bitter finish, and I can’t deny that it’s refreshing. However, this is as traditionally British as beer gets, and there isn’t a lot of flavour going on.

Matteo’s Ciao @ Craft Islington. Thanks to Chris. Almost opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and fairly dry, modest fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts. Lots and lots of Christmas spices. Tangy fruits. Light dry finish. Classic heavy handed over spiced Christmas nonsense.

Bottle shared in London / thanks to Chris! Pours clear deep brown with a frothy, tan head. Lots of wintery spices in the nose, toasted brown bread. Light sweet flavour with chalky cinnamon, bitter baking cocoa, scorched earth, torched grains. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Dry finish, fairly bitter, with burnt leaves, earth, dry cocoa, more holiday spices. So so overall,
