Description
Maidstone has a long tradition of commercial brewing dating back to before 1650. At the beginning of the twentieth century there were still four independent brewers operating in the town, but by 1972 the last of these had been taken over and ceased production.

In 1983, after an interval of eleven years, Phil and Debbie Goacher opened their own brewery in the Loose valley thus reviving the art of brewing in the county town. However, in 1990, the need for expansion saw the plant moved to new industrial premises in darkest Tovil.

The modern brewing plant was purpose built and constructed along classical lines, allowing for full-mash brewing and open fermentation in stainless steel vessels. In addition, all Goacher's Ales are produced from 100% malted barley and whole Kentish hops without the addition of sugars or artificial colouring of any kind.

We believe that our commitment to excellence and traditional methods produces ales of distinction and character much sought after in this increasingly standardised world.

Cask@Kent Beer Festival 2006. Dark amber color, small white head. Fruity, slightly sweet nose. In the start fruity malty, but then the finish is moderate bitter. Long hoppy aftertaste. Well-balanced bitter.

Cask handpull at Dering Arms, Pluckley. Badged as Dering Ale. Deep copper, lasting white head. Extremely malty and hoppy. Orange/tangerine fruit, somewhat like candied fruit with smack of bitter hops on end. One of the best pints of this that I’ve had in a time. Seems to have more of the fine light ale about it than the dark. Distinctive Goacher’s aroma and just slightly acidic in the mouth

Gravity dispense Merton Beer Festival 18th Feb. This is a pretty good example of what a typical English mild is all about. Dark brown, nice clean head, whilst a tad on the light and thin side it has a pleasant malty flavour with a slight bitter and dry finish.

[Cask at the Volunteers Arms, GBBF 2005] A red-brown beer with a nice brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted combined with very light notes of hops. The flavor is very sweet with light notes of roasted malt, chocolate, vegetables, and celery. The alcohol prickles the tongue slightly. I wonder where the Imperial in the name comes from in a beer of 4.5% ABV?

Cask at Dering Arms, Pluckley Kent Dark ruby colour with nose of sweet malt, but there is certainly an astringency and hoppiness there in the aftertaste. Good for warming you up in the middle of winter 3.4/5.0 Re-rate. 08/01/07 Very deep brown with touch of russet and lasting beige head. Roasted nuts, coffee, strong dry malt and touch of syrup on the aroma. Some hop too. Gorgeous in mouth, exquisitely full, light choc malts and roasted nuts. Toasty more than dark roast. Some juicy dark fruits. Finish is dry, full and juicy with dry toast coming through most. The longer it oxygenates, the sourer the fruit becomes. Damson, sour dark plum, sour dark cherry, sour blackberry. All wonderful. Give it another couple of hours in the cask and it will be even more wonderful.

Gravity at Red Lion, Snargate. Dark ruby with burnt malt with coffee and chocolate blanaced with some hops to give a dry finish. Lots of flavour for such a low alcohol beer and a mild too boot. Excellent Cask at Catford Beer Festival. Normally one of my favourite milds, this one was a bit thin, tired and acidic. Good burnt malt notes on the nose with bitterness throughout. Quite a short finish
