Draft at Mellow Mushroom Charlottesville, 7/25/14. Pours a hazy yellow with a thin creamy white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of earthy, pine, floral hops, pale malt, mild nutty notes. The taste is citrus, pine hops, pale malt, mild caramel. Medium bodied, slight lingering bitterness.

Can: Little aroma, mainly barley malt but some corn. Clear amber, thick head. Light flavor, malt forward. Again, barley with a subtle presence of corn. As good as this style can get without encroaching into another style.

Had a taste of this at the whole foods on my way home from Churchkey. Light berry taste, though I wouldn’t necessarily identify it as blackberry if I didnt know. Finishes with a sticky sour sensation.

On draft at Lost Dog in McLean VA. Pours a clear gold with an off white head. Fruity nose. Flavors of grapefruit. Crisp bitter finish.

Ok but another example of excessive barreling. The age kills the hops, the barrel kills the hops, and this doesn’t really end up tasting like an IPA let alone a DIPA. That being said, it’s an ok beer, as long as you take your preconceived notion of IPA out of the equation. But not a great beer. Tap at Churchkey.

750ml bottle pours a fairly dark orange, basically a caramel colored brown with some sudsy, lacing, off white head. Nose is interesting, there isn’t a ton of prevalent bourbon or DIPA there really, a little licorice, some sumac, some mild peppercorn, vanilla, some mild wood pulp, some dried cherry. Nose is very interesting, it’s really all over the place but not in a bad way. Flavor is more of a barreled BSDA than anything, some candy sugar, some malt, some caramel, some soap, some herbs, more of that sumac, a little black licorice, vanillin, a little orange, some wood, a little dried coconut. Full bodied, lightly sweet finish. If you were expecting a double IPA, then you’ll be disappointed. If you wanted a good beer, you’ve found one.

Location: 750 ml bottle from somewhere in Richmond, 7/26/14
Aroma: It has a rather sweet raspberry aroma, with some light roast notes
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown, with a fizzy head on it
Flavor: There's a good amount more roast in flavor, but it is still sweet though
Palate: It has a lighter body for the style at least, with an avarage carbonation to it
Overall Impression: I thought this one was a pretty nice beer. For one with so much sweetness, it didn't turn me off, which is a feet in and of itself. Another nice beer from Hardywood.
