Deep dark brown coloured body with a very rich and oily two centimetre tall strong brown head. No light permeates the beer, even at an angle - fully opaque. Aroma of alcohol, vanilla, oak, cedar, coffee, earth, caramel, toffee, cognac and whiskey - strong and pungent. Full-bodied; Rich roasted malt flavours at first with a very slick and oily feel showing a ton of vanilla up front with a good oak, cedar and cognac flavour right afterwards and a lot of rich raisin and pit frut sweetness near the finish. Aftertaste shows a good mix of alcohol, oak barrel flavours and a good strong stout backbone - no real faults here. If you like the cognac and whiskey flavours, then you’ll really enjoy this one. Overall, a good oak-based imperial stout with some solid flavours and a smooth yet pungent complexity - great to have! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Falls Church (Bailey’s Crossroads), Virginia on 06-March-2014 for US$12,99 sampled at home after quitting my very first job after college after 10+ years on 25-July-2014.

Super crisp, golden coloured body with a nice, dense, three centimetre tall tan head - very nice and microfoamed. Aroma of ridiculously soured malt, white grapes, yeast, bread, lactic sugars and even a gueze like complexity, coupled with hay and grass - easily one of the best smelling beers i’ve been around for a long time. Medium-bodied; Strong yeast and bready notes at first with a mild, yet noticeable grape and fruit flavour. Some sour lactic notes are soon around with a hit of earth, grass, hay, coriander seed, light spice and even some cherries noticeable. Aftertaste is super complex, especially for the style - if this had a belgian-styled bottle with no label, you would have never known it wasn’t from the great country. Overall, a great beer, one with a ton of complexity, a rich sour note, yet remains a relatively easy-drinking beer. One of the better examples of this style i’ve seen from the USA in a long while - DEFINITELY worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Falls Church (Tyson’s Corner), Virginia on 06-February-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 21-July-2014.

What I would call a session saison. An easy drinking bland beer with a touch of hay or grass. Pours cloudy pale with OK head and lacing. Finishes with light bitterness. Some crisp grain. Tap at whole foods.

Trader Joe’s, Alexandria can: Pours golden with white head. Aroma is sugary with the malts and light hops. This comes out as a pretty simple cream ale. Light hoppiness. Plenty of sweetness. Easy drinking. Decidedly uncomplex, but perfectly acceptable in every other way.

12oz draft at the brewery. Poured a hazy golden orange/yellow color with a medium sized white, creamy head. Aroma was grain, wheat, some citrus and touch of pine hop notes. Flavor was sweet, grains, a touch of yeast character. Some fresh green onion in this though from the hop - which was a little disappointing. Otherwise, a fine hoppy wheat ale.

12oz draft at the brewery. Poured a clear golden copper color with a small white head. Aroma was light malts, mostly citrus forward notes. Flavor was light citrus. Pretty refreshing, but just a touch of bitter grapefruit in the finish makes this one not as enjoyable as it really could have been. About perfect for a 90 degree day though.

From the July 2014 3R6P gathering. +++ Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large foamy tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was tangy and malty anise, chocolate and wood. The flavor was tart red wine, coconut, vanilla, toasty malts, anise and a boozy presence. Long finish. Moderately full bodied and fairly creamy. Booziness lingers. Interesting.

Bottle @ RBSG Grand Tasting. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy gingerbread aroma with hints of bourbon. Roasted malty woody spicy gingerbread flavor with hints of bourbon. Has a roasted malty woody gingerbread finish.
