Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Hardywood Tropication IPA 7.5% Canned in September, mellow brassy gold with a rich fruity aroma. Quite full bodied with a decent fruity flavor. A bit long in the tooth but still good.

Deep copper and bronze coloured body with a very thick, three to four centimetre tall light tan head that is very fluffy and stays afloat for a long time. Aroma of pine, flowers, candy sugar, light malt with a light bitterness from hops, but not very strong and not dry-hopped like a West Coast IPA. Medium-bodied; Pungent, grassy and herbal note at first with some of the candy sugar and soft floral hop notes do show through, but almost no pine, hops or bitterness available at all - quite subdued and dry, but the malt and sugars show more than any hops - especially piney or West Coast types. Aftertaste is dry, malty, almost nutty, with a large sweetness and again, theoretically no real hop flavours and nothing worthwhile to contribute to the style. Overall, a pretty bad example of the style - frankly, it was NOT a West Coast IPA, and not even an IPA - at most it was an APA - and even then, still showed more malt and sugars than hops. Definitely passable and not worth grabbing, even if the name sounds good - which is what I thought! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 28-April-2020 for US$5,29, canned on 22-January-2020, sampled at my house here in Washington on 03-May-2020.

[12oz stubby bottle from Beer52.] A hazy pale amber pour with a billowing cream head; malty aroma; sharp citrus taste, rather sour; then grapefruit to finish. Quite nasty.

Relatively hazy, but slightly clear golden, orange, peach and light copper coloured body with a thin, single centimetre tall off-white and tan head. Aroma of citrus, grass, flowers, alcohol, light malt and a dash of stone fruits with a splash of sugars - mainly from fructose, but robust throughout, with a good deal of hop bitterness, of course. Medium to Full-bodied; Rich, almost creamy flavour at first, with a lot of fruit flavours that hit with the citrus, grapefruit and stone fruits, but also a floral and light grassy bite, with some reserved hop bitterness, but very supportive malt backbone, showing a lot of alcohol and light but soft sweetness from fruit and jam. Aftertaste is clean, relatively straight-forward, but deep, robust, bitter, fruity and showing quite a bit of alcohol and astringency, as expected (with 8,0 per cent alcohol). Overall, a solid Imperial-ish IPA as an East Coaster (not a New England) that hits the hop and bitter notes right, while being robust and deep. Good to try, especially very fresh! I sampled this sixteen ounce can, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 17-April-2020 for US$2,99 sampled at my house here in Washington, a few blocks away, only five days later on 22-April-2020.

Hardywood Bourbon Cru Bourbon BA Quad 12% 18 IBU This was amber brown with little foam but a rich plum/raisins, sweet malts aroma that’s classic quad. The fairly full body delivers more of the same with added richness and a woodsy sweet bourbon finish. Incredibly smooth with no hint of the ABV but you definitely feel it afterwards. Well done and I’m not a big quad guy.

Can from a local Total Wine. Poured a slightly hazy golden yellow color with a small, off-white head. Aroma was nice citrus, tangerines, tropical fruits. Lots of vitamin C here. Orange zest, creamy vanilla, light sweetness. I joked that it was kind of same-same with other hazy, juicy beers, but still is a great beer.

Tight bubbly white head stayed on an unclear light amber body. Well balanced aroma with a lightly spiced hit. Medium bodied, soft on the tongue with a prickle down the throat. Malt forward with pine, resin, grapefruit, pith & caramel with a long tangy finish. Excellent West Coast

Hardywood VIPA Virgindia Pale Ale 5.2% Bright copper color with a decent amount of foam and the aroma on first whiff was alright from this beer that’s almost a year old. Once you take a sip you don’t get any of the tropical/juicy notes the label promises, the hops have faded a lot leaving generic bitter pine. Served cold it’s a very middle of the road pale ale/IPA that’s obviously past its prime. Still drinkable though.

Past it’s prime but drinkable. It reminds me of the first imported IPAs I had ages ago in Japan. Pine and caramel on a medium to full body.

Bottle from Beer52. Golden-amber with a white head and a light fizz. Lemony citrus with mild pine and a little butterscotch. Mild to moderate bitterness with the right amount of sweetness to balance. Reasonably crisp and clean. It's fine but forgettable; it's a fairly standard old school IPA, pleasant and drinkable but with nothing to make it stand out or be memorable in any way.
