(Bottle 33 cl) Another Van Steenbeerge brew made from a recipe from De Hopduvel. Pale brown with lots of impurities making this slightly muddy. Decent head. Some roasted malt and slight chocolatey notes. Rather well balanced. Decent if not exactly sophisticated. 170398

An opaque brown beer with a collapsing brown head. The aroma is roasted, and the flavor is very sweet with notes of caramel, while the mouthfeel is sticky. This reminds me of a Danish Hvidtøl, except the licorice is missing.

(Bottle 33 cl) Brewed for "ABTS" (whatever that is) in Bierbeek. Hazy brown with a nice, fluffy head. Extremely refined flavours in the direction of aged port wine. Vinous with more acidity than bitterness. Could resemble some of the more sophisticated trappists. Van Steenbeerge brews an incredible amount of beers of varying quality, but this is truly excellent. CHEATING! A little bit - seen Papsoe’s given the historical background - this might have been one of the last bottles in existence from the original Neyt brewery (BBD 1992!) I thought it interesting to compare, even if this beer was never meant to age this much. Clear, deep-foxy colour, end of bottle hazy; slim white head, dissipating. Moss, ironoxide in the nose, and a faraway acidity - lactic maybe, or just galvanic, a bit buttermilk-like. Great taste despite the oxidation, again a flavour like a galvanic (metallic) acidity. Dusty cookie malt in the background. Aromatic finish, like a good vintage wine, severely diluted. Very refreshing (a bit Berliner Weisse like), light body, but leaving a velvety tongcoating. If you’re open to this kind of taste, this one has stood up great, certainly for its meagre 5.3 % ABV. BTW, I wonder if the V.S. version would do as well.

(Bottle 33 cl) Unusual reddish amber colour with a gigantic, beige head that takes a looong time to fade. Dry, malty feel here with a rather pronounced sourness. Some slight caramellish notes but only a hint of sweetness. Sourness also in the finish. Unusual but rather refreshing beer with the alcohol almost completely hidden. 130605

(Bottle 25 cl) Nice golden, hazy with a lovely full head. Some sweet malt with very refined flavours - there’s got to be some spices in there. Rather light body in spite of the alcohol. A nice beer. 280897

(Bottle 33 cl) Another Bios-beer from the rich recipe-book by De Hopduvel in Gent. Dark golden with a rich, frothy head. Good head-retention, leaving laces when it finally collapses. Very fresh fruity almost flowery nose. And the same notes are detected in the flavours. A bit low in carbonation. Very potent but the alcohol is in no way unpleasant. (Bottle 25 cl) Amber with a reddish tint, fair head. Pronounced sweet’ n’ sour notes. Tart, wit some wooden notes and a taste of iron. Comes close to a Rodenbach but with a fuller body. Shouldn’t this rather be labelled as a "Flemish sour"? 200497
