Description
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

(Bottle 25 cl) Dark and hazy with a decent head. Very malty, lightly roasted notes with some dark sugar-feel. Unusually strong - I think I would prefere the alcohol turned down a bit in this. Somehow it cannot really contain it. 291196

(Bottle 25 cl) Paleish yellow, with a very white, rather small head. Nice citrusy touches and a soft tartness. But nice and rounded with lots of flavours. Almost no body and no bitternes either. But quenching indeed. 181096 (Bottle 25 cl) As "Gensch Mannekes Pies" 4/2/5/2/9=2,2 291005

(Bottle 25 cl) Usually a Bock is a strong and heavy, dark bottom-fermented beer. But in the low countries things are different. This isn’t even pale, rather amber-coloured - decent although not exactly gigantic head. Some sweet caramel from the malts - but never cloying. Finishes on a dry, hoppy note. 150996

(Bottle 25 cl) Van Steenberge/Bios is mainly known for it’s strong ales. But they’re also respoinsible for this light ale of the "Speciale" type. Beautifully amber-coloured and dry with a rather small head. Some fruity esters and a touch of caramel. Light hoppy finish. A fair challenge to De Koninck, Palm, Gilden Bier, Ops-Ale - whatever. Apparently this was originally brewed by the "Brouwerij Neyt" in Evergem of which only a "Trankencentrale" remains (thanks Joris) 050996.

Bottle claims only 5% Yellowish tinted head, fast gone; dull brown beer with foxy shine. Sweet-bready nose, malty, liquorice - or something similar; know it, can’t put my finger on it. Sweetened yoghurt, maybe? Surprisingly bitterish initial taste, still (faraway- bread, nutty, buttery (diacethyl?), sweetness as from Traubenzucker , bit cardboard. Well-filled for only 5%, slick, longish sweet aftertaste. I know that in faraway Texas, the Spoetzl baby was the aim. But what under heaven is the aim over here? A Bock - of 5%? In Belgium, "bock" is tablebeer, in Germany, it’s something potent. This is neither. Oh well, it isn’t bad.

Bottle Pale, blond body. White, frothy head, mostly diminishing. Nose of hops. Lightly bitter flavour. Watery body. A decent table-beer.

(Bottle 25 cl) It’s quite an ususal creation af fruitbeers, that Pierre Celisi has prodced in the "Brussels"-series. Wheatbeer and fruits. And in this case, quite a lot of fruits. If the label is to be trusted, there is a stunning 30% cherries and cherryjuice in this. This makes for a very red beer with certain impurities and a limited, slightly rose head. Pronounced -but apparently authentic- flavor of cherries and good balance between a slight sweetness and a ditto sourness. 080105

(Bottle 33 cl) Greyish orange golden with a thick, tough head, that might descend but never disappears. Unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.Very solid blond ale with lots of sweetness with is more or less balanced by the bitterness. But it’s the strong flavor of yeast that is really apparent. Strong, alcoholic oand not very refined. Typical Van Steenberge. 281204

(Bottle 25 cl) Orange golden, almost peach-colored. Slightly hazy with a white, creamy head. The peach-flavour is pronounced but not dominating. Like the rest of Pierre Celis’ fruitbeer creations, this has an apparent, fresh sourness to it. 280804

(Bottle 25 cl) Pierre Celis is known as the man who reintroduced Belgian witbier in Hoegaarden, and since then he’s been a great innovator with several projects. This is one of them. A line of fruitbeers based on witbier. It’s been seen before, but with 30% fruit, this much be one of the fruitiest ones. Beautiful rose color and a rather handsome and stable head. Apparent raspberry-aroma and a strange sourness, that made me think of lambic. 080804
