Description
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

Draught att Bull & Bear Inn, Stockholm, Sweden.
Reddish amber with creamy head. Toffee aroma. Mild and sweet, clean but rounded. Some burnt sugar in a velvetty finish.

Hazy golden-orange colour with a small (< 1 centimetre) off-white head. Smells of yeast, wheat, spices and an odd savoury aroma (think Worcestershire sauce). Medium to Full-Bodied; Strong alcohol presence in addition to a bunch of malt, a healthy dose of lower a.a. hops and tons of sweet flavours. Finishes with a pineyness and an alcoholic kick. The taste from start to finish is packed with flavour and is very strong. Overall, this tastes much more potent than it smells, but in both respects it is about average for the style. Worth trying, because it is a bid odd...given the aroma and the tate. I was given this 33 cL (11.2 ounce) bottle from fellow Ratebeerian JonR888710 which he purchased at Lee & Edwards in Roanoke, Virginia. I sampled this beer on 30-August-2003.

Slightly hazy golden color, large lasting head, frothy, rocky. Spicy and fruity aroma. Bit sweet, apple. Bit yeasty taste, also spicy and sweet. Dry quite alcoholic palate. Almost a bit like white wine.

Yelloish-brown head; dark brown, opaque beer. Nose of sweet cookies, gingerbread, alcohol, fruity & vinous aromas. Immediate bitter impression in the taste, then (little)bitter-(much)sweet taste, keeping alike. Flavours are grainy, fruity and vinous-alcoholic all the way. Very full-bodied. Alcoholburn and lcoholtaste - some higher alcohols? Esters certainly. Lemonbalm flavour retronasal. Well carbonated. Fruity, strong, liqueurish. But not very refined, nor exciting. Just a strong punch to me.

An unclear light yellow beer with a fine head. The aroma fruity and dominated by lemon. The flavor is rather sour and like lemon. In the middle it is a little wheaty flat and sweet. In the end the flavor is slightly acidic wheaty. A very fresh beer. I think the Belgian version is more sour than the American version.

Dark brown with orange-red shine, hazy. Yellow-brown head, gone in seconds. Woody, lactic & acetic acids in the nose, the last as in Balsamico. A sharp, spritzy bite by the acids comes first. There is malt behind it, but the colour seems more liquid colouring than dark malt to me. There is a fruity sugarness ("Traubenzucker") in it, ending in a heavy, woody finish. Medium-bodied, refreshing. A perfect example of 'Vlaams Oud bruin'. Closer to the original Rodenbach than Rodenbach 'classic'. Brij. Van Steenberge makes a few worthwhile beers (Bornem, Augustijn); they make one great beer - this - and one world-classic: the lagered pale needed to blend this beer - and which is never sold. And probably hold the world record on labelbeers.

Huge dark head that disapear a little bit too quickly for my liking (this seems to be a problem withVan Steenberge). Really yeasty but not as thich as I was expecting from the description. The ABV level is too much apparent for my liking. Extra point for trying to be different: dark triple and cool bottle.

Very hazy orange. Medium-white head, collapsing. Yeasty nose, fruity-estery, a sourish tinge as from wheat, coriander. Very neutral taste: again wheatimpression. Retronasal flavour as from celery, and ironoxide finish. Light to medium-bodied. Lively carbonation. Ok - but nothing exciting.

The color of this beer is amber and it has a beutiful caramel colored head. The aroma is slightly sweet, fruity, and fresh. The flavor is sweet, malty, and yeasty and rolls over the tongue with lemon and coriander notes. It turns in the end - and all the flavor with all of its complexity lingers a long time. It has a great palate for a beer thats "only" 5.2% ABV.
