Description
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

Thick, fast disappearing white-pinkish foam. cardinal-red, clear beer. Breath-taking smell of cherry sweets/gums, overtly sweet. Hard cherry gums again in the taste, not really fruity. Slight acidity at the tonguesides. Light to medium-bodied, impression of fruit juice. Aftertaste carries most of the acidity. This is better and the only sign of a real fruit beer. It may not be complete disaster - it comes near enough. All the more a shame as the regular Bios is quite a nice old brown.

The colour is quite dark-brown, little caramel-shine in it. The head is brownish. The aroma is spicy, little bit sweet. There is also some sweet in the flavour, some caramel. I like this beer.

First version brewed at De Proef: 7/4/7/3/15 Brewed for the "Stadswaag" in Antwerpen, a nice square (now with lots of pubs) which was once the target of a bomb, dropped by a Zeppelin. Nearly black, but with red-brown shine. Very ample, yellow-brown head. Nose of roasted walnuts, coffee, celery. Sourish taste from the roasted barley, nearly vegetable-fruity. Roasted malt/barley, very few restsugars. Restrained bitterness. Retronasal quite some liquorice. Medium-bodied, strange, as the beer gives a strong stout impression. Slight burning sensation; long roasted aftertaste. A remarkable beer, but it ages fast. A younger sample would have Guinness, Rochefort and even Westvleteren notes. This, slightly older, ventures into Flemish brown territory. Guinness Foreign Extra Stout the Belgian way? Second version by Van Steenberge (notes as above) Amber to cardinal red; huge yellowish-amber, dense head, very stable. Sweet vinous nose, fruity, "Mon Chéri" bonbons, portwine, some faraway, sweet malts. Sweet, vinous taste with a distinct roasted tang. Figs’ flavour, some hidden chocolate hints. Extremely thick, viscous beer, creamy, velvety MF, alcohol obvious. Much sweeter than the Proef version. I would be tempted to say "less complex", but in truth, the complexity is on another level. A more sweet one, sadly.

Honey, apples raisins and the usual belgian background. Red brown, creamy head. Sweet malt, apples, citrus, but the flavors lack balance - the front of the mouth promisses a lot which the back does not hold. The strength gives it a seemingly full body. Nice nightcap.

Bottled. Golden coloured and very lively with rich head. Strong aroma of dried fruit and good, dry cider. Sweet and malty with clean, hard malt profile. The finish is drier and rounded, still fruity, and with grassy bitterness.

White ale, but to me, it has a litlle bit a watery-colour, although it has a nice white head. It has a typical Witbier-aroma (like Hoegaarden), it smells like some kind of soda. It has even the typical (quite disgusting) flavour of the Hoegaarden beer. The difference between this-one and Hoegaarden is very small.

Bottle: Poured a dark yellowish ale with a large head that disapear quickly. Typical Tripel but not as good as Westmalle. Good taste of wheat. Overall not my favorite but still very refreshing

Very cloudy brown color, with a thick beige creamy head. Malty and nutty aroma, caramel and toffee. Same taste, but a bit more metallic taste. Slight bitter and dry finish, and the 'double' taste doesn't remain quite well.

Pours a solid orange color with an ultra-thin off-white head. No lacing. Aroma is sweet spices, with a faint skunky presence here and there. Flavor is almost dominated by the alcohol, but there are nice malt and grapefruit flavors apparent as well. Overall not a bad experience but this beer isn't up there with some of the better Belgians I have had.
