Description
Established as the Matthews Brewing Co in 2005 by Stuart Matthews and Sue Appleby in a farm workshop estate in the village of Timsbury, a few miles outside Bath. Using the best ingredients such as Maris Otter malt , this small 5 barrel brewery soon became known for its distinctive, uncompromising ales.
Taken over by Dawkins Taverns and name changed in January 2010. The Brewery moved from Timsbury near Bath to Bristol in 2016.
Closed May 1st 2023 due to cost of living crisis.

Cask @ Volunteer Arms, GBBF 2008. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has roasted malty caramel aroma with some hints of chocolate. Roasted malty slighlty fruity caramel flavor with some hints of chocolate. Has a roasted malty caramel finish.

Cask (handpump) @ Market Porter, 9 Stoney Street, Southwark London, Greater London England SE1 9AA.Clear medium to dark amber color with a average, frothy - creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, nutty, caramel, black berries, smoke, licorice notes in the finish. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20081227]

Cask-conditioned at the Portcullis, Clifton, Bristol 3/2/09. Deep amber in colour with a slight, off-white head. Sweet malty aroma and flavour, with a hint of grassy hops and decent bitter finish. Ok. Exclusive to Dawkinsโ taverns in Bristol.

Cask (handpump) @ Great British Beer Festival, GBBF 2008, Earls Court, London, England SW5.Clear light yellow orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, moderate hoppy, flowers, citrus - lime. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Refreshing. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. (070808)

Cask, 4.4% at GBBF08. Almost black colour. Stable frothy light brown head. Good roasted aroma. The flavour is also nicely roasted. Thin mouthfeel, but very good flavour.

Cask-conditioned at the summer beer festival, The Royal Oak, Bath 19/7/08. Deep golden in colour with next to no head. Aroma of caramel, hay and summer fruits. Flavour began with some sweetness, before digestive biscuits and a grassy hop finish took over. Good.

Cask-conditioned at the Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol 2/5/08. Pale amber coloured with a slight white head. Aroma of citrus, light spicing and grain. Light mouth feel with a hint of spicing, sweet malt and some citrus hops in the finish. Enjoyable.
