Description
Initiated by 3 young graduates, the Ninkasi was born from a simple idea: to implant the concept of American micro-breweries in France. This project was completed in 1997 and takes place in Lyon, on the Gerland site. In 2012, the factory moved 50km from Lyon, to Tarare more precisely (1 avenue Edouard Herriot). The new playground for our brewers has a capacity of 5,000 liters per brew (i.e. 23,000 HL / year). In 2023, Ninkasi moved to its new brewery, still in Tarare.
Note: The original Gerland location closed for works until 2027.

From tap at Ninkasi Saint Paul, Lyon. Clear golden color with white to off white head. Malty aroma, caramel, some homey, light citrusy, some grainy notes. Sweet and light bitter taste like aroma. Light to medium thin to oily body with soft carbonation

On draught at Ninkasi Croix-Rousse. Light brown and very clear. Resinous scent, with a strong floral note. Bittersweet and nicely balanced. Body is a bit thin but the aftertaste is nice and hoppy. My favourite of the Ninkasi beers.

Draft at Ninkasi Croix-Rousse. Mid- to dark gold. Very little head or visible carbonation. Bland and slightly medicinal aroma. Bit of kumquat. Sweet taste with a hint of bitterness. Sourness and astringency in the aftertaste. A mediocre beer. For the ABV I wanted much much more.

Draught at Ninkasi Croix-Rousse. Golden brown with a shade of red. Little ring of off-white head. Full raspberry aroma with a malty note. Nice. Lovely taste, not all that exciting but a decent bittersweet balance. Weird astringent aftertaste which I’m finding to be an unfortunate trademark for this brewery. Nonetheless a nice enough fruit beer, much better than so many others of this style...

Draught at Ninkasi Croix-Rousse. Light yellow, slightly hazy. Clovey grainy aroma, ok but not up to much. The taste is the best thing about the beer, with a surprising hoppy bitter twang among the sweetness. Odd medicinal aftertaste takes it down a notch. A mixed bag but certainly drinkable.

Draft at Ninkasi Croix-Rousse. Light to mid-gold. Clear with a bit of white head and lots of lacing. Looks mega-filtered. Smells it, too... although the citrussy malty aroma is pleasant enough. Taste is sweetish and a bit stale and uninteresting. Not particularly fond of this one but it’ll do.

Light floral hops and q faint touch of citrus. Golden pour with OK head and lacing. Comes together OK but pretty light on palate. Light sweet finish. Hint of flower resin. Tastes more like a light Belgian ale than a tripel. Tap at Churchkey.

At one of the brewpubs: Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is grass. This beer is pretty bitter and a bit herbal. I didn’t like the first few sips as I kept at it, it grew on me. Not bad at the end of the day.
