Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. Dark brown, opaque with a small layer of khaki head. Aroma of chocolate malt, light liquorice. Taste is sweet, almost syrupy at first, with strong notes of plum and liquorice. This quickly gives way to an intense bitterness, with black malts and serious bittering hops. Notes of tar in the finish. Intense little fucker, this.

Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours lemon yellow with a small white head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – just vaguely biscuits and lemon. In the mouth it is sweet and malty (also light and somewhat watery). Biscuits the main flavour, with some hints of citrus. Eventually there is a little floral hoppiness too. Finish is slightly dry. This is OK, but rather bland to say the least.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a pale gold with a small white head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – just vaguely lemon and generic hops. Tropical fruit and lemongrass in the mouth. Pepper follows later, before finally some sweet malts appear. Finish is rather dry. Nice enough, but not a worldbeater.
