Description
WHEN YOU SIT DOWN WITH A BEER, YOU’RE AFTER SOMETHING. Maybe it’s nuanced layers of flavor, the siren call of a favorite hop, or to test your skill identifying stone fruit tasting notes. Maybe you’re chasing the new or craving the familiar, perhaps you just want to kick back for a drink with friends—and order another of the same. At Bearded Iris, our beers meet you where you are and deliver the experience you seek, whatever it might be, because that’s what we believe makes beer worth drinking. CULTIVATE VARIETY DRIVES US AT BIBCO. (WE’RE NOT KIDDING.) With a menu that skews heavily toward IPAs, DIPAs, and pales, it can appear that we don’t, in fact, cultivate much “variety.” But here’s the thing: we’re not looking to bombard you with a checklist of styles. Instead, we know that each hop varietal and every intentionally selected ingredient contains a multitude of possibilities that can be deliberately unlocked and unleashed, then honed and hemmed in tightly, to construct a pint that’s unapologetically itself, memorably composed, and fun to drink. Every time. Regardless of style. To us, that’s the variety worth cultivating. And that’s what we bring to your table.

Good pils, very heavy on the Saaz, with strong floral-herbal hop currents undercut by a modest vegetal note. Lots of yeast providing alternating layers of lemon and white bread, with hints of sweet grain and citrus underneath. Finishes crisp with a lingering yeasty tang. Very American pils, but also a drinkable one.

Draught at Dominion: pours hazy orange with white head. Aroma is grapefruity, citrusy in general. Taste is pithy, sort of bitter. Not too new englandy for what its worth. Solid beer.

Bottle. Pours a near clear yellow gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dry citrus and grass with a bit of earthy tropical fruits and some light onion. Flavor has the same dry citrus with some slightly dank onion and a bit of sweet grains and dank tropical fruits supporting.

God, the nose on this thing. Not sure why it's so unbelievably fragrant, but waves of citrus and tropical fruit are wafting from the glass. Strong stuff. Tastewise, doesn't quite live up to the initial impression, offering up grapefruit and papaya and pineapple, a little bubblegum, a little earth, and a strong pine bitterness laced with dank on the back end. All good, sure, but the various notes never quite coalesce into a classic IPA. Still, not a bad pint in the slightest.

Pint can. Cloudy yellow pour with a huge sudsy white head that has fair retention. Aroma is big and bold with grapefruit tangerines, oranges and other orangey stuff. The taste mirrors the nose with abundant fresh citrus fruits--lots of oranges offset nicely with bitter grapefruit. Finishes long with lingering grapefruit. Palate is full and viscous. Overall: Decent, might buy again. As a retired US Navy Chief, approve of the naming. Now go paint the focsle seaman.
