Mike Holmes continued brewing great beers old and new up until early 2020 when finally he decided to take off his wellingtons for the last time and retire. The Xtreme Ales Brewery was purchased on May 4th 2020 by two of the Peterborough based Hunt brothers Martyn and Simon. It continues to be a family run brewery producing many of the great award winning ales as well as a strong portfolio of new recipes the Hunt brothers have brought to the business.

Gravity cask at Draymans Son, Ely. Clear yellow with some intermittent white head and lacing. Smells of unwashed damp socks and sticky malt. Taste is improved, with a pleasant sharp bitter bite and a long bitter finish. Lemon juice and millet in the aftertaste. One to have when I’ve got a cold.

Gravity cask at the St Neots ’Booze on the Ouse’ Beer Festival 2016. Purplish-black and delightfully impenetrable. Light brown ring of head. Charcoal, rock salt and stone fruit in the moody and complex aroma... more than a hint of smoke. Sweet and fruity taste, but weaker and less intense than what was promised in the aroma. Body surprisingly weak, and the finish is short and a bit messy... some of the sweet/savoury interplay is interesting though. Still an above average beer despite its flaws, and worth seeking out.
