Description
Anchor is America’s first and oldest craft brewery, with roots dating back to the California gold rush. Today, our beers are handmade from an all-malt mash in our traditional copper brewhouse. Our process combines the time-honored art of classical craft brewing with carefully applied, state-of-the-art modern methods.

Pleasant appearance - pale gold with a thin layer of white foam on top - some alcohol can be detected in the aroma (odd for a beer of this alcohol content) - pleasant cascade hops in the flavor, but the hop character is more like that of a regular pale ale - not much else going on in the flavor - slighty graininess - nominal malt presence - generally thin bodied, light for an IPA - this is like a "lawnmower beer" for hop heads.

It's always a shame when a decent beer is constrained to a mere 7oz bottle. Well at least I got to enjoy those 7 ounces. Pours a deep reddish-orange with a thin but lasting off-white head. Aroma of malt, cherry, and alcohol (rum). Medium-bodied and easy to drink for a Barley Wine, with flavors of sweet fruit, malt, and spices. Alcohol is well-masked. The finish is sweet and lingering. Nicely done.

Orange color. Very nice aroma, more delicate than other times… roses, lightly fruity (mango…). Weaker body, quite malty but not as much hoppy

Hazy orange / light amber color; generous creamy head; bottle conditioned. Very nice fruity aroma, typical of Cascade hops, and hoppy. Medium body strength, but well structured, not really malty, almost dry. The hop character develops mostly at the end. A great beer, just lacking a better body.

A true dessert beer. I was wondering why I paid $2.49 for a 7-ounce bottle, but I was pleasantly rewarded. Old Foghorn is dominated by caramely, sugary malts, with only slight hopping. This one reminds me much of Dogfish Head Immort Ale. Overall sweeter than Anchor Liberty Ale, and not as much a session beer. Great stuff!

An IPA? Come on! This one is a barleywine light, no question. The aroma is sugary sweet, with a floral, malty touch. Hops are present but are spare for this to be a true IPA. Instead, this beer is dominated by sugary malts, and drinks much like Dogfish Head Immort Ale. Not an IPA, but an excellent choice if you're looking for a barleywine without such a high alcohol percentage.

A black beer with a light brown head. The aroma is slightly smokey - but not enough for a porter. And the flavor is dominated by a sweet smoked taste - not my preference of a porter because of too little smoked malt - but a nice beer.

An amber beer with a fine head. The aroma is slightly malty and the flavor is slightly acidic with a soft malty tone. Really a great tasting beer.

2001 version: Very dark color, rapidly disappearing head. Aroma of roasted malts, spices, fruits. Taste is more burned malts again, with a little bacon or smokey taste. Long palate, my tongue is like an oven after this roasted stouty stuff.

Dark color, almost black. Quickly dissappearing head, brown lacing. Aroma of heavy malts, bacon, salami. Barley malt taste, typical non-belgian, licorice, coffee. Very weak porter. This is soooooo overrated...

Dark color. Some malt aroma; phenol. Malt mouthfeel, some roasted malt, caramel, phenol again! (maybe too warm).

Black color, brownish persistent head, nice perlage. Pleasant nose of malt, roasted malt; light medicine. Excellent mouth feeling, wrapping, roasted malt, light coffee, light liquorice, roasted nuts, malt, some sweetness. Powerful final, long, a lot bitter and with a bold liquorice character.
