Description
Strathaven Ales is the pinnacle of traditional real ale brewing with our stone clad brewing kettle and well used brew-house based in an old mill dating back to the early 1800s. The mill originally manufactured crushed barley for the brewery trade and flour for the local artisan bakers and it sits next to the river Avon near the market town of Strathaven.
We consider our beers to be very traditional, our brewing, unlike modern facilities is a hands-on labour intensive process crafted by three generations of the same family.
Manufacturing in an old building brings its challenges and we have retained many of the original mill features and a large part of the original gearing. Although this often gets in the way we feel it is part of what ensures the beer has a character not achieved in modern production units.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Reddish chestnut with a ring of cream head; lacking in aroma; the body is grainy and thin, with a caramel taste; then a dry finish. A very basic, and unattractive, bitter.

Hand-pulled pint in The Briar Rose (Spoons), Birmingham on 30th Oct 2013. More amber than red, even though the pump-clip stated ’Red Ale’, with a white, lasting head. Pleasant enough blend of flavours, mild citrus nose with malty overtones: taste is 50-50 with the hops and malts vieing for position, with neither winning the battle. Medium bodied and very drinkable: but I’m on a mission, so only one of these today.

Bottle from Deeside Drinks Emporium, shared with the RB posse. It pours clear golden yellow with a thick beige head. The nose is honey, earth, spent grain, mild malt whisky, vanilla and light peat. The taste is earthy, oat, light peat, whisky, toast, floral, grainy, faint medicinal, sweet dough, vanilla, wood, citrus and alcohol warmth with a dry, lightly bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Nice balance. I am surprised that a pale whisky barrel-aged beer actually works. Good stuff.
