500ml bottle [happily not a wrecked bottle from Grumbo - thank you!]. Almost black colour with weak ruby glimmer and small, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Chocolately, dark malty aroma, some roast, a touch of coffee, celery overtones. Taste is bitter, roasty dark malty and slightly bitter hoppy, hints of cold coffee, a touch of celery.

6/10/2018. Bottle from Flower Farm Shop, Godstone. Pours amber bronze with an off-white head. Aroma of cinnamon, Christmas spices, fruit cake, toffee, malt and hint of ginger and dark chocolate. Moderate sweetness and medium bitterness. Moderate body, watery texture, soft carbonation.

Cask at Swan, Farnborough. Floral hoppy aroma. Medium gold. Thin bubbly white head. Medium bitter with a sour citrus edge. Thin bodied. Watery. Flat. Dry astringent finish. APA? No. Just a citrusy gold. Bland.

Cask at the Land of Liberty Peace and Plenty, Chorleywood, Herts. A black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, chocolate, some dark fruit, slightly bitter finish. This was served in top condition. Decent.

Cask at Swan, Farnborough. Vague malty caramel aroma. Chestnut. Thick creamy off-white head. Light bitter. A slightly sour edge to it. Malty base. Light-medium bodied. Thin. Low key fizzy carbonation. Abrupt finish. Easy drinking. Enjoyable on a Friday lunchtime.

Handpull cask at the Castle Tap, Reading. Light gold and clear with almost no head. Light buttery and gummy aroma. Taste is bittersweet, slightly resinous with notes of physalis. Flat, oily body. Nothing to recommend it really.

Bottle at Cobbetts, Dorking. Pours black with virtually no head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, light coffee and dark fruits. Medium plus sweetness, light to moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, soft to flat carbonation. Chocolate finish.

Bottle @ Cobbetts, Dorking. Black with a small light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and caramel. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and roasted moderate bitter finish. 140218

Drink in bottle @ Cobbetts, Dorking. Nice head with good duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are roast malt, chocolate, licorice and hops. Nice licorice finish.

Cask at the Bell, Waltham St Lawrence. An attactive pale amber colour with a loose white head; aroma of sour grains; full bodied and grainy with a sharp grapefruit bitterness to start, then some leafy English hops; leading to a rather short finish.
