Clear orange beer, small creamy off-white head, stable, non adhesive. Aroma: fruity, orange peel, kiwi, kaki fruits, weird, a bit oxidized. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: alcohol, rum, lots of rum I guess, soft bitterness, pretty fruity, weird. Aftertaste: bitter, dry, fruity, hoppy touch. Interesting, but not great.

Clear blond to yellow beer, big creamy white head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: malty, bit fruity, some bubble gum, banana, slightly smoky. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: yeast, some banana, soft bitterness, caramel touch. Aftertaste: hint of citrus, hoppy, nice bitterness, good one!

One of the liquor infused, limited editions of Broeder Jacob's Lazarus, this time with calvados; best before 2022, so I guess this was bottled in, what, 2017? Anyway: mousy, large-bubbled, egg-white, thinnish and somewhat loose head, diminishing and gradually breaking open, until only a thin ring around the edge remains; initially cristal clear, 'metallic' orange blonde beer with warm 'old gold' tinge, some thin but lively strings of sparkling rising up from the bottle of the glass, turning misty with sediment. Aroma of baked banana, candyfloss, calvados in a 'generic' way (without the refined and noble character I remember from it) and even whisky, blonde sugar, caramel candy, glazed pears, honey, clove and even a vague touch of chicken stock (4-vinyl-guaiacol), hint of soaking wet wood, very faint sulfuric accent (freshly struck matches). Sweetish onset, hints of peach, banana and ripe Doyenné pear, sourish undertone, minerally aspects adding a spring water-like effect but carbonation nevertheless is relatively soft; slick, smooth-edged, bit resinous body, caramelly maltiness with white candi sugar syrup adding a honeyish residual sweetness, very light peanutty touch faraway, leading to a drier finish with clove-like phenols and a dash of floral hop bitterness, but both are largely muted by a strong calvados effect, heating the back of the mouth and throat and indeed recognizable as calvados, but becoming a bit obnoxious and wry in the end. Underneath this overt booziness, a late but retronasally very clear, more elegant woodiness lurks, adding an extra layer of depth, though perhaps not quite enough to save the day... Like other variants in this series, the beer itself lacks body and complexity to undergo a wood chip plus liquor treatment, but the wood chips do come out nicely. The calvados is a bit too harsh for me personally, as if an actual shot of it was thrown into the glass - which physically is not that far from the truth. Not every single beer gets better with wood and liquor added and obviously this cheap shortcut will never have the same effect as actual barrel ageing either. A bit crude, straightforward and boozy, this remains what it is: a sweet and boozy tripel with a shot of calvados in it. Clearly an attempt to cash in on the whole barrel ageing hype without actually being barrel aged - a cheap alternative to it, basically - but in any case it shows a bit more complexity than the regular Lazarus, so enjoyable to a less educated palate, I suppose. I am left rather unimpressed, I expected just a little bit more here.

Cette Lazarus Whsky Infused ne dénote en rien aux autres...toujours aussi médiocre. Et tout comme celle au sherry et celle à l'armagnac, j'ai eu vain de cherche le whisky. Je regrette d'avoir acheté ces bières. Pour la description de cette version au whisky je vous renverrai à celle à l'armagnac, peu équilibrée et brouillonne autour d'arômes de miel, de pêche, de pain, de banane et de fut de chêne, mais ici vous rajoutez une acidité un peu plus marquée et un final aigrelet qui n'arrange rien à l'affaire. Mais je tourne avec grand plaisir cette page Lazarus...

Essayons de positiver, cette Lazarus à l'armagnac est moins pire que celle au sherry. Ok, il est impossible de reconnaître l'armagnac. Ok, cette bière n'est pas équilibrée. Ok, je regrette d'avoir encore celle au whisky à déguster. Mais je suis certain que je vais réussir à lui trouver une qualité…hum…en fait non, quoi que, j'ai pu la finir, c'est déjà ça. En verre, sans être exceptionnel, c'est acceptable tout de même avec un blond orangé quasi limpide parcouru par de grosses bulles et surmonté d'une mousse blanc cassé de 5 mm. Au nez nous avons des arômes de miel, pêche, pain, fut de chêne, banane, pomme avec une pointe citronnée. Ne cherchez pas l'Armagnac, cela ne sert à rien. À la dégustation non plus d'ailleurs qui reprend les arômes présents au nez auxquels s'ajoutent des épices et un alcool au relent de gin qui s'intègre mal à l'ensemble. Le sucre est trop dosé ce qui alourdit la bouche. La texture, douce, est agréable cependant. En deuxième bouche ce sont des arômes de poivre qui s'ajoutent à la base toujours aussi lourde et à l'alcool toujours aussi mal intégré et qui ressort davantage. C'est d'ailleurs en arrière-bouche qu'il s'exprime le plus, en étant d'autant plus dissonant. Le final, bien qu'un peu plus fraîche et aérienne n'arrive pas à relever l'ensemble et qui reste plombé par cet alcool et cette base maltée. Rien à réellement reprocher à la corpulence et à la longueur. Quand on indique Armagnac, j'aime avoir de l'Armagnac. A défaut, je me serai satisfait d'une bière équilibrée.

Uit een flesje bij Huub. Geel, licht troebel. Prima smaak, licht zoet, kleine bitter.

Hazy deep golden colour, fair frothy white head, good lacing. Aroma sweet malt, yeast, bread, light banana and orange. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, malty, banana, light orange, bit peppery on the tongue. All in all a nice tripel but not very special.

Si l'idée de cette Lazarus au sherry est bonne, la réalisation est proche de la catastrophe : difficile d'y retrouver des arômes de sherry et surtout bière peu équilibrée avec trop de sucre, un alcool à 8,5% mal intégré, une légère acidité et une amertume fluctuante. En verre, pas sensationnel non plus avec un blond doré opaque et une mousse blanc cassé de 3 mm. Le nez est sur les céréales, la banane, la pêche et la coriandre. Le sherry ? On le cherche…il est possible de le deviner très, très loin. A l'attaque il en va de même où des arômes que l'on s'imagine ceux de sherry avec un peu de boisé s'ajoutent aux arômes du nez, le tout sur une alliance pas exceptionnelle. Mais c'est avant tout l'équilibre qui déçoit comme évoqué. La seconde bouche est dans la lignée sans réelle évolution. L’arrière-bouche est confuse sur des arômes qui font quelque peu chimiques. Le final termine sur une note d'amertume, accompagnée de fruits jaunes et de faibles aromes de barrique. Corpulence et longueur sont honnêtes cependant. J'ai du mal à comprendre la bière, en tout cas sur sa réalisation.

Bottle at home. Quite typical tripel-like golden color, full sized white head. Aroma is faint, I don't get much. Flavor is malts, somewhat yeasty, slightly dry-herbal-bitter-ish. Hard to describe but very tripel-ish and one of many. It's ok but there is nothing that stands out. Then again, maybe they were going for that. Mwah. 6-3-6-3-11.
