Large sample on 14th July 2014 in The Clay Oven, Irvine Orange County during a beer and Indian food night. Poured a deep, clear amber with copper highlights, the head a tanned affair. Grapefruit aromas with sweeter citrus notes also there, some maltiness too. The taste was also citrus in nature and again the grapefruit type content came through the most, tempered by the malts to produce a good, well balanced beer. A blend that I enjoyed, pity I only got one sample to try.

14th July 2014: large sample at The Clay Oven, Irvine Orange County at a beer and Indian food evening. Pours a dark amber brown with a red hue when held to the light, off-white to beige head. The nose was both malty and hoppy, semi-sweet molasses vieing with mild citrus notes for your attention. Bitter with a centre of maltiness in the mouth, good blend of flavours which hide the alcohol nicely. A complex and interesting beer which crosses a few style boundaries in every sip.

Decent sample at The Clay Oven, Irvine Orange County during a Beer and Indian Food tasting on 14th July 2014. Looked good and was. Black body with beige topping. Roasted, toasted malts rule the brew: Coffee and dark chocolate notes in both the aromas and taste. A delight to drink, sniff and look at. There is a mild earthiness to the flavour which prevents the brew becoming too sweet or one dimensional. A very pleasant easy drinking Stout with enough going on to keep any beer geek happy.

Large sample during a Beer and Indian Food evening at The Clay Oven, Irvine Orange County on 14th July 2014. Looked good and interesting: it was in fact both good and interesting. Poured a dark, deep brown with full tanned head that hung around. Toffee sweetness in both the aroma and taste of this malty IPA (is that allowed?) that has a good hop presence but is second fiddle to the maltiness that gives the beer it’s colour and most of the flavouring/aromas. I am no regular Black IPA drinker so can not really compare this with a host of other tastings, but I thought this different and well made, no matter what style it is supposed to be (medium to thin Stout like in my opinion).

Decent sized sample on 14th July 2014 at a Beer and Indian Food evening: The Clay Oven, Irvine, Orange County. Tasted between two strong Stouts and basically used to cleanse my mouth: which it did nicely. Amber and clear body, off-white crown. The nose was hoppy with floral notes. The taste similar but seemed a little bland and thin with subtle/weak flavouring. A refreshing enough beer but lacked depth compared to some of the heavy hitters it was up against at the 5 brewery tasting evening.

2nd August 2014
Almost clear amber beer, decent pale cream colour head. Palate is light and minerally crisp. Light thin malts and light dry cream. Touches of orange and orange peel. Light bitterness before the semi dry finish. It’s fine if a bit on the timid side.

Bottle at the Black (IPA) Friday tasting, from Public Beer & Wine Long Beach, 09/05/14. Light black with a good sized tan head that retains. Nose is light roast, pine, earthy, light fart, hint of hops. Taste comprises bitter roast, pine, earthy cocoa, light hop and tropical pangs. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light hop bitterness. So so CDA.
