Bottle shared in London - many thanks to my CDA comrade C-Dog. Pours deep brown with a frothy, yellow-beige head. The nose has well toasted brown bread, toasted pine, old grapefruit. Light to medium sweet flavor with dry chocolate, bitter earth, cocoa, dried fruits. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Earthy bitter finish with further baking cocoa, roast, charred pine. So so. Pretty dirty and gritty.

Bottle at Bruce’s. It pours darkest brown with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, cocoa, earth, dirt and caramel. The taste is bitter, toasty, resin, pine needles, grapefruit, peppery, tar and dirt with a lingering bitter finish. Medium+ body and moderate carbonation. Pretty alright,

Keg at Rock’n’Fish, Laguna Beach, 17/04/14. Clear amber with light reddish tones when held to the light topped with a moderate light beige swirl. Nose is toasty maltings, orange, pinch of spice, light caramel, faint hops. Taste comprises caramel, toasty notes, hint of vanilla, biscuit, light spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. A thoroughly whelming inoffensive amber shmamber, may as well be 6,000 miles away back home ticking at a Spoons fest!

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours very dark brown with a slight dark tan head. Aroma is very malty with chocolate and maybe coffee. Med body. Flavor is treacle/toffee, smooth dark malt, coffee. Not getting chocolate, but the dark malt flavors are strong enough to hide a little. Might be a touch of anise. Finishes dryer than expected, but malt is still pretty dominant. This may be as good as stout gets without introducing barrels and/or brett.

Bottle from CraftBeerKings.com (Plaza Market). Pours hazy orange gold with very little head, if any. Aroma is mildly orange. Med body. Flavor is tangy orange with some spice. Maybe even a touch of banana. It’s maltier and more flavorful than many wits, but it lacks the subtlety of many paler and less flavorful versions. But it’s a nice drink.

10th rating of this bad boy. Bottle. Cloudy orange yellow color, small off pink head that settles quickly. Aroma of feet and belly button, not overwhelming. Taste is lacto sour throughout, and the cherries sneak in toward the finish. Decent enough.

Slightly hazy blonde and peach coloured body with a thin, half centimetre tall white head and a good deal of bubbles rising from the bottom. Aroma of foul dirty diapers, sour grapes, vinegar, sweaty feet, lemons, wheat and a very pungent and not pleasant grassiness with the faintest bit of sweetness. Light-bodied; Sour cherry and raspberry flavour at first with a very nice, super light wheat flavour and hints of grapes, lemons, oak, tart melon and a good deal of yeast and grassy flavours. Aftertaste is complex, especially for the style with a fruitiness and dry herbal flavour that is quite nice, tucked with the more overt sour and fragrant wheat and light yeast taste. Overall, a nice berliner weisse with not a great smell, but a taste and complexity that rival some of the better options in the beautiful city of Berlin. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from Bottle Craft in San Diego, California on 06-June-2013 for US$8.25 sampled at home in Washington on 28-October-2013 in celebration of running the USMC Marathon on 27-October-2013.
