Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.

We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.

Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

355ml bottle. Barely clear, copper-ish, dark amber colour with small to average, thick, frothy, half-way lasting, minimalyl lacing, off-white head. Minimally grainy, bready malty aroma, fruity hoppy overtones with a touch of orange. Taste is mellow malty, minimally toasty bready, minimally chocolately, hoppy overtones with a touch of orange. Lame.

Tap at the Dock Store. Pours dark gold with a white head. Aroma of pale stone fruit and citrus. Med body. Flavor is earthy, fruity, citrus. Nice caramel support. Dry, but only moderately bitter. Then it seems to go about as bitter as an old school IPA - anyway it’s just excellent.

Tap at the Dock Store. Pours hazy orange gold with a white head. Aroma of tart, almost pickled, plum and spice. Med body. Flavor starts plum - goes peppery tart - goes pineapple - goes mild sourish plum - goes a bit woody. C call complex. I’m really enjoying this. Wild sour plum in a moderate way. Bet this would go great with sushi.

Tap at the Sudwerk Dock. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Grapefruit is the leading aroma. Med body. Flavor starts wheat, goes grapefruit/citrus, almost tropical - nicely bitter - lager as tasty as ale - more taty than most wheat ales. Very nice.

This beer is a hazy orange-gold color with a medium foamy white head that recedes steadily to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of tropical fruit, hops, yeast and malt. Medium to full body with flavors of grapefruit, dank hops, earthy yeast and malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a citrusy hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

500 ml bottle. The beer is a medium brown with a bit of magenta to it. The liquid looks somewhat cloudy. No head. Just a few bubbles on the pour. The aroma is a nice mix of Flemish red flavors and raspberries. Bright with some juiciness from the fruit. Mild caramel malt sweetness. Some balsamic vinegar. Moderate oak or maybe just general woodiness. Taste has moderate to medium sourness. There’s a solid vinegar Flanders tartness, but it doesn’t cross the line into vinegar pucker. A bit less fruit but it’s there. Light funk. Really nice blend of flavors. There’s malt sweetness mellowing the sour flavors, but it doesn’t get in the way. No off flavors, which seems like an accomplishment relative to other non-traditional takes on the style. Light to medium bodied. I’m absolutely loving these Brewers Cut bottles from Sudwerk. They deserve a lot more acclaim than they get.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Pours very light gold with a white head. Aroma of fruit and citrus. Med minus body. Mild pale malt, light noble hop, and I still think a bit of fruit and citrus. Finishes with a mild spicy bitterness. Nothing overly strong here, but the flavors are good and work well together.
