Almost 70 years after the family’s ancestors started farming at Pine Trees Farm, Rob Payne became the 5th generation to join the family business.

The fruit industry, particularly for smaller farms, is a struggling sector in UK agriculture, but Rob was determined to find a way to pay his wage and continue farming.

Making cider seemed like a natural progression. Using apples grown on the farm, Rob made his first small batch of cider in 2009 to sell at local farmers’ markets.

Cider in a box at Cambridge Blue courtesy of staff, thank you! Crystal clear pale yellow color, still. Apple skin aroma. Taste is sour apple flesh, tart, bone dry. Really tasty and a nice cider finisher

Cider in a Box at the Ale House in Chelmsford. Clear bright golden yellow color, still. Aroma of pear flesh and cores. Taste is fruity pear, vanilla, light lemon. Medium dry. Very nice

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - bright red cherry. Steady carbonation. Nose - fresh and sweet red cherry. A hint of marzipan or almond. Taste - sweet red cherry. Palate - light to medium bodied and generally sweet with low acidity. Overall - pleasant enough if on the sweet side.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - bright orange, steady carbonation with no head. Nose - tangy orange and apricot. Taste - fresh and dried apricot with an orange zest finish. Palate - medium bodied, tangy sweet middle and dry, tangy finish. Overall - decent.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - pale yellow with steady carbonation. Nose - fresh green apple and apple skin. Taste - again on the fresh and drier end of the apple spectrum. All very fresh. Palate - light bodied, tangy and persistent, dry finish. Overall - good.

Box @ Stable, Birmingham. Pale translucent gold complexion. Clean, lightly sweet with an oily palate, moderate floral perry fruit character overall. Ok.

Badder blag at The Royston, Broadstairs, 08/10/22. Clear light golden blonde with little in the way of a head. Nose is mellow apple, tannins, straw, light farmyard waftings. Taste comprises apple core, tannins, light sugars, orchard wood, faint citric spike, apple skins. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, drying close. Not bad.

Bladder bag box at the Royston, Broadstairs, 07/10/22. Pale yellow with no head. Nose is apple pulp, sharp apple aromas, tannins, oak. Taste comprises bitter apple peel, straw orchard wood, apple core, light acidity. Medium bodied, modest carbonation, big dry dry close. Not bad.

Bladder bag box at the Royston, Broadstairs, 07/10/22. Cherry red with a modest crimson covering. Nose is moderate cherry notes, light apple, straw, herb. Taste comprises bitter sweet apples, less cherry presence than the aroma, straw, hedgerow. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light drying close. Passable fruited cider ... sweet but not runaway sweet.

30/9/2022. BIAB taster courtesy of danlo, cheers Ed. Pours clear bright gold with minimal head. Aroma is sweet pear, floral, hay, slightly rubbery. Quite heady sweetness, slightest tart edge. Moderate body, oily and sticky, low carbonation. Too sweet for my liking.
