6.8/10 Setting 8 Selection 8 Service 4 Food Value 7 Overall 7
We visited here Thursday 9th October 2025 after a 917km drive from Feldkirchen nr München that started 5pm yesterday and brief overnight stay nr Frankfurt. In reference to 77 Ships review below where he questioned the low marks, I actually can understand the low marks, I am not going to give a low mark however we were not that impressed with the service. Anyway back to the place, it's on the road to from Grote Markt and the Menin Gate in what for me is probably the most interesting and lively street in Ypres now. It's very easy to find and as Ypres is relatively small it's close to the centre. We visited after the last post ceremony which was attended by a huge crowd, so got here around 20:30.

It's an attractive looking building from the outside, brick fronted but also a lot of glass with floor to ceiling door and glass at the front affording a good glimpse inside. It has a modern feel and is very smart, narrow'ish' and long. We didn't browse for long and both simply selected one of the regular tap beers Corsendonk Triple. The female staff member wasn't so friendly, didn't really make an effort to engage with us and not long after we turned up pulled the blinds down at the front of the bar, so clearly no one else was able to get in and it was only 9pm and we got the impression they actually wanted to close up. This was disappointing so rather than check it out further, which we'd have liked to have done we swiftly finished our beers and left. I believe that they have 25 beers on tap and their is a large bottle choice, I further believe that they have a courtyard garden area but again no time to check things out further. Maybe it'd have been better to schedule a daytime visit.

We visited here Thursday 9th October 2025 after a 917km drive from Feldkirchen nr München that started 5pm yesterday and brief overnight stay nr Frankfurt. This place is 'almost' the closest that you can get to the Menin Gate, however there is a bar next door on the corner that officially takes that honour which I think is called Ypra. I'd been told a lot of positive things about Øl, great bar, incredible unfiltered Hommelbier from the tank, nr the Menin Gate etc, etc. Firstly it is well located on a lovely, lively street between the Grote Markt and the aforementioned Menin Gate, it was a pleasant day and so we sat outside.

Please note that it's not table service you must go to the bar to get served, but payments in card or cash are acceptable. The barman was fine but could have been a bit friendlier, btw bar is on the right shortly after entering. We asked for the unfiltered Hommelbier, it was poured from a tap but clear as a bell, so I question whether this is indeed unfiltered. Inside it's a nice place, very tidy, nice mix of old and modern and upstairs which is where you'll find the toilets it's really lovely, I liked the building. I didn't spend a lot of time perusing the beer menu but it looked decent to me. Prices were very fair but I don't know, much like St Arnoldus later in the day, a friendlier approach from the bar staff and maybe the fact that our beer didn't completely identify with what we had correctly ordered put a negative on this place. Overall it could do better.

On tap (cask) at Bankers Vaults, Stockport Monday 13th October 2925 after a very nice couple of hours in Stockport with Keef Mullin and son Carl. Pours mid gold with small/medium creamy textured white head. The nose is lightly fruity aroma and there's a background hoppiness. Mouthfeel very soft, creamy, light easy drinking fruitiness, yeah it's fine, it's a pleasant easy drinker if a touch safe.

Can that Dad picked up from Asda today and shared with dad, Monday 13th October 2925 after a very nice couple of hours in Stockport with Keef Mullin and son Carl. Pours hazy light/mid gold with small white head. Tropical fruit on the nose, some pineapple cubes and a little bit of mango perhaps. Flavour following a similar trajectory with the addition of a little stone fruit, so a touch of peach and unripe apricot. Solid well balanced DIPA, perhaps just a little bit safe but otherwise very pleasant.

Can picked up in a ten pack from Pentrich and posted to and shared with my dad, Monday 13th October 2925 after a very nice couple of hours in Stockport with Keef Mullin and son Carl. Pours dirty milky yellow/gold, with a white head. Juicy and sweet with a clear nod towards tropical and summer fruits. There are times when it feels that the fruitiness (now soft peaches) is overipe, but it's still lovely, the alcohol is never intrusive and it's well balanced. Nice beer.

Can picked up by dad from Asda and shared with my dad, Monday 13th October 2925 after a very nice couple of hours in Stockport with Keef Mullin and son Carl. Pours gold, actually warm gold edging towards orange with a white head. Light fruitiness on the nose, mostly sweet orange, alcohol is well hidden. Decent bittersweet balance, good mouthfeel.
