Bottle that we never got around to drinking at the weekend, picked this up from the brewpub, Modrava and consumed at home Monday 21st July 2025 cooking Chanterelles in a Creamy Sauce with Tagliatelle, listening to ByteFM. It's been a shocking day today, rained most of the night and then heavy rain for much of the day. Pours very dark brown, a very deep mahogany with an off white head. Roasted malts dominate both the aroma and the flavour with a little thin watery coffee element, some dark sugar in the background, not bad. Soft mouthfeel, a little dark fruity tang, fine.

We visited here Saturday 19th July 2025, in the company of Marko and Ursula, btw thanks to Marko for adding this. I spotted this place recently and felt we should visit it for a few reasons, however from the perspective of this website the fact that it is an outlet on draft for the relatively difficult to track down Stangl beer from Klingenbrunn (Helles available) then I believe that it is justified. Furthermore Dampfbierbrauerei from Zwiesel can also be found here, certainly a Hefeweisse but the Dunkel and Sommerbier in bottle if the Google map photos are up to date. However as Marko mentions the exact range of beers available is quite difficult to determine as there were no details available and furthermore the website doesn't elaborate.
The place is located close to the national park just off the N85 main road that connects, Regen, Passau amongst many other places, if you turn off at Eppenschlag and head along the ST219 and turn at Wolfertschlag (you will see the signs) and follow the road and signs up the hill. The area is lovely and on a clear day I suspect that as well as the peaks in the Bayerisch Wald the Alps should be viewable. There is a small campsite, guesthouse, farm etc all on site, with signposted walks in the area accessible right from here. Getting here by public transport would be a bit tricky but there are certainly buses connecting the likes of Eppenschlag, Klingenbrunn and Spiegelau as well as the Waldbahn which is a little further afield.
The set up is nice, there is a central courtyard which is where we sat, but also appears to be plenty of indoor seating when the colder months draw in. Service was a little slow but there appeared to be a wedding taking place at the same time, however once we'd ordered our drinks were brought out swiftly and by a friendly member of the staff team. We liked it here and I suspect that Loz and I will certainly revisit, either by bike or maybe even an overnight stay in the camper and have a meal here.

We had this at Restaurant Grenzglashütte Bayerisch Eisenstein, Sunday 21st July 2025 in the company of Marko. Pours light gold, not so hazy, white head rapidly departs, it's understandably a little bit thin, not completely my thing but on the plus side there's a little clove, and subtle wheaty, yeast and hoppiness on the nose.

Bottle that I picked up from Beyond Beer or Beer Republic? Consumed in the company of Ursula and Marko Saturday 19th July 2025 at the Mangled Ham tasting. Haven't looked at my standard review but this is just a quick run through of this 2024 edition. It's a huge stout, uncompromising, lots of treacle, bitter, roasty, really in yer face bourbon all over this but it doesn't overstay its welcome. Really nice softness, super boozy, a lovely huge stout.

Bottle that I picked up many years ago. Consumed in the company of Ursula and Marko Saturday 19th July 2025 at the Mangled Ham tasting. Had this on numerous occasions it really is one of my favourite beers. Loz points out and she's right there is an orange flavour here that is picking up with age, Jaffa cakes she said and yeah she's bang on, the sweetness has definitely dropped off, it's a very interesting beer with a few years on it.

Bottle that I picked up from Bierkiste. Consumed in the company of Ursula and Marko Saturday 19th July 2025 at the Mangled Ham tasting. Wow this was a really lively pour, beer was super eager to depart the bottle, something is possibly a bit wrong here, dry, feels like its lost something, really thin, body is lacking it's not a bad beer but for these guys not amazing either. I'm not a big fan of rum cask aged beers but the rum isn't overly assertive here. Not totally my thing, thin and lacking.

Bottle that I picked up from Camba over a year ago and then completely forgot about. Consumed in the company of Ursula and Marko Saturday 19th July 2025 at the Mangled Ham tasting. *The start of this review is the same as the himbeer version.......Btw it's a very funny frosted curvy bottle, it looks like one of the vinegar bottles they (Camba) once used and which I assumed was a beer until I got home and read the details again and realised it actually was a vinegar. Clear reddish colou, a thin white rim of tiny bubbles. I'm not picking up bourbon in either of these bottles, yeah a little wet wood, it's tangy and with a tart edge, the sour cherries are doing a better job than the raspberries did, it's safe, it's almost a lambic with L plates.

This has a sour, light raspberry edge, it's not bad but it's almost as if it's flirting with making a beer of this style. Not bad but it's a cagey beer, a little bit dusty, but thinking again there is a real feeling for me that it's playing at this a little.

Can courtesy of Marko, cheers Marko, and consumed in the company of Ursula and Marko Saturday 19th July 2025 at the Mangled Ham tasting. Pours dirty yellow/gold with a small white head. The cocoa on the nose is quite nice, I was very hopeful to see how this would turn out, however flavour wise it's weird, very unusual, it's quite unbalanced. I think this combination could work in a different IPA, perhaps a session IPA just cannot carry the cocoa and it needs a more robust IPA and the cocoa in moderation but noticeable.
