Excellent, excellent 16th century pub in a fairly isolated Leicestershire village. The building itself oozes history with a CAMRA award for almost every year. The main bar/dining area is small-ish but very comfortable with a real fire and brilliant conversation. The beer is good, with a lot of local-ish producers (on my visit: Grainstore, Oakham, Nene Valley and Castle Rock). Judging from the pumpclips, they really fancy Oakham, although I went for the Nene Valley and it was in amazing condition.

Keg draught at the brewery taproom, Melton Mowbray. Mid-gold and mostly clear with a massive, massive beige head. Not much aroma. A little bit of citrus, floral notes, lemon balm. Taste is more present with a bittersweet character, some citrus, slightly herbal. Watery body with heavy carbonation. Not bad at all but I want a bit more character.

Handpull cask at the brewery tap.mid- to slightly dark gold and clear with an uneven ring of off-white head. Hay, toast, kumquat jam and a touch of candy sugar in the aroma. Sweet taste, fruity and bready, with a light bitterness down the line. Medium body with little to no carbonation. Okay.

Handpull cask at the Stilton Cheese, Somerby. Light to mid-gold and clear with a small film of white head. Unobtrusive aroma: grasses, kiwi, light toffee, orange peel.Taste is bittersweet with some full citrus and tropical fruit and heavy strong iced tea. Slightly bitter and drying finish. Light to medium body with light carbonation. Fantastic. Refreshing and moreish.

Keg at Hopology, Leicester. Lightish gold and pretty hazy with a small ring of white head. Smells of apricot, cracked wheat, orange peel. Taste is sweet, with sweaty stone fruit notes, with only the lightest bitterness. Light to medium body with intense carbonation. I love this brewery. All their beers have character.
