Keg draught at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Light to mid-gold and hazy with a ring of white head. Gorgeous little aroma of stone fruit, cantaloupe, orange peel. Sweet taste, lots more melon, a touch of floral almost savoury note, then turning quickly bitter. Light body with heavy-ish and spritzy carbonation. It is a little bit muted, but it's pretty nice all things considered.

500ml bottle taken away from the Royal Exchange, Stourbridge. Light amber/gold, clear with lots of visible carbonation and a thin impersonation of white head. Malty aroma, baked bread, slightly floral and sweet but I cannot really place it. Sweet taste, again lots of malt, a little bit of fruity hop suggestion (I think this uses hop extract), more grain in the finish and a little tonic bitterness. Thin body but carbonated to hell and back so that works. I mean, for a low/no beer, and a traditional one at that, it is surprisingly drinkable.

Keg draught at the Colmore, Birmingham City centre. Mid- to dark gold, cloudy with a thin beige head. Lovely bready aroma, spicy yeast, overripe banana, a touch of balsamic vinegar. Sweet taste, a little spicy with some bitterness near the finish. Medium body, heavy carbonation. But not too heavy. An English take on a German classic, and man I've missed drinking these sorts of beers.

Handpull cask at the Prince of Wales, Cambridge Street, Birmingham. Light gold, clear as a bell with an uneven and slightly loose white head. Aroma gives earthy malt, light sweet citrus, melon notes. Sweet taste, an almost savoury yeast flavour swept away by the hoppy citrus. Finish threatens to get too bitter then backs off a little. Gentle body, soft carbonation. A lovely offering from Mallinsons.

A lovely Black Country Ales pub not too far from the proper city centre. Well attended on a Saturday afternoon and so should it be. The exterior is lovely, and the smallish interior has been sympathetically redesigned while still in the Black Country Ales style. No surprises on the selection, although I thought there may be a few more tickable beers for me here today. Mallinsons, Little, Fownd, Salopian, Woodforde. And of course Black Country Ales. Cask in good condition. My only issue is the price, but then again this is central Birmingham, and if 60p on a pint matters that much to you, you might need to cut down! Not a must-visit, but a ‘recommended if you can fit it in’ pub.

Keg draught at the brewery tap, Stourbridge. Mid- to dark gold, cloudy with a small swirl of white head. Aroma of canned pineapple, white grapefruit, a little bit of vanilla malt. Bittersweet Tate, more pineapple and grapefruit with a very bitter finish. Light body with medium carbonation. Not bad, but kind of muddy overall.
