Another Yorkshire Town, another Vocation bar. Which isn't the end of the world really, as you know what you're getting and they tend to have an impressive list of (mostly) their own beer. In Halifax you're treated to 6 cask and 18nkeg, including some rarer styles and stronger beers. Plus there are cans to take away. The layout is odd, as there's not a lot of seating on the ground floor (there is a link to the pizza place next door) but you can trudge up to the cocktail bar or rooftop terrace (floors 2 and 3 respectively). Maybe not the best place in Halifax but one you may wish to check out, especially outside of busy times.

Handpull cask at Vocation & Co, Halifax. Mid-brown and unfathomably thin with a full beige/khaki head. Roast malt in the aroma, some coffee, slight metallic note. Taste is bittersweet and very metallic. Light body, soft carbonation. Drinkable but not a lot here sadly.

Old-fashioned pub feel. One might even say... Victorian. Oh so that's why they call it that. Two levels of seating with the bar on the ground floor and toilets upstairs. And the beer... My world 10 cask and 18 keg, much of which is proper tickable stuff. Lots from the North but breweries from farther afield such as Pretty Decent and Vault City. There are about five wonderful Beer bars within minutes of each other in Halifax, but this just might be the best.

Keg draught at Victorian Craft Beer Cafe, Halifax. Light gold, hazy with a small intermittent film of white head. Big malt aroma, citrus fruits with melon and pineapple, slightly resinous. Tastes sweet but contained, more vanilla malt with citrus and melon, a touch vegetal. Light body with good carbonation. It's ok.

So many of Halifax's best pubs are within spitting distance of each other, so it seems churlish to complain about trudging 10-15 minutes out to Dean Clough for come here. But it is a little bit north of rhe centre proper. Its is lovely here, a bit rustic/posh but still comfy with two separate rooms with the bar in a more dimly lit area to the left and brighter seating to the right. Three casks and one interesting keg (a pils), all Stod Fold and all sessionable. The beer is good if a bit dear for what it is, and I wish they would push the boat out a bit more - the cask offerings consisted of a Porter, golden and a si gle hopped pale (Archer). Worth coming out? Sure, and you're likely to get ticks as I've not seen their beers before.

Handpull cask at Stod Fold @ Dean Clough,, Halifax. Dark brown, mostly opaque with a medium to large tight khaki head. Aroma of ash, blackberry, roast coffee. Taste is bittersweet with more coffee and a trace of liquorice followed by a bitter finish. Light to medium body, soft carbonation. Pretty good stout.

Possibly the newest, and smallest, micropub in Halifax town centre. It's both a beer store and a bar, but I'm calling it a bar as its almost at maximum comfortable capacity (15) on an early Wednesday evening (although there is also some space upstairs). Two cask and three keg on the bar, plus three chilled fridges and loads more on the shelves to take away. The draught selection includes smaller local breweries such as Bini, Big Trip and Escapade. Cheaper than I've seen in some time. Don't let the size fool you, they pack a big punch! Dogs and children allowed until 6pm.

Lovely Art Deco pub a short walk to the south of the town centre. Five separate rooms, each one with a slightly different feel. The big issue is the beer, I'm not overly keen on Ossett and that's mostly what you'll get here. Six cask beers plus a couple of worthwhile keg. Cask in fine condition. The gents could do with a spruce up but I've seen worse. The sort of place you really shouldn't miss.
