Draught keg at Hop In, Halifax. Light to mid-gold, a little hazy with a ring of white head and a lot of lacing. Notes of satsuma, orchard fruits, a touch of pine. Sweet taste, lively balance between the grounding malt and the the fruity hop. More pear and citrus. Finish is a trifle more bitter. Full body with carbonation that's heavy but doesn't steal the show. Very good.

Quite few decent micropubs in Halifax, and the Meandering Bear is no exception. Seemingly named after a bear that escaped the Halifax zoo in 1913, this clean and modern one-room open plan pub has plenty of delights. Not a massive selection but a good one, including brews from Brew York, Torrside and Elvington (a Black IPA and Festbier, respectively, from the latter two). Make sure you pop your head in and see what's what.

Draught keg at the Meandering Bear, Halifax. Orange/brown, a little hazy with a small off-white head. Light malted aroma, some gentle notes of berry. The taste is where it comes alive: Sweet spiced green coffee and bready malts. Short bitter finish. Body is light, with heavy carbonation. A decent take on the style.

There have been no reviews of this pub in 12 years but I doubt much has changed since Olut's visit. If you're nit looking for it, you won't find it, but there's a circular route from the bus station that takes you here (otherwise it is about 25-30 minute walk). I walked down a road with mire potholes than I've ever seen, turned onto a smaller residential street, and there's the Bix Six inall her beauty and simplicity. Mostly open plan but there are several room-like areas which different feels to them, plus a snug near the bar. Four cask beers on, my visit had two from Ilkley, one from Leeds, one from Pictish. Very well kept, so the smaller choice is made up for by brilliant condition. Decent prices. This is a great place, and while I can understand that it is kissable on a town pub crawl due to location, you just might wish to make the effort.

Decent old-fashioned pub, on CAMRA's National Register of Historical Interiors. Its friendly and convivial enough, with plenty of space despite the reasonable footfall on Tuesday afternoon. The beer, while decent, shows this isn't a ticking pub. Three Wensleydale beers plus the Northern Monk/Tim Taylor collab stout. A few things on keg that can be ignored. A pretty good, basic functional pub in a pretty building, but I personally love those especially with well-kept beer (like here).

Handpull cask at the Royal Oak, Halifax. Dark brown and translucent with a fairly tight khaki head. Light aroma of roast malt, some coffee. Sweet taste with creamy chocolate, coffee and and an almost umami-like Marmite twist. Body is light with soft carbonation. It's not bad, and has an intriguing complexity to it.

Bohemian and well-loved music-oriented pub in the town centre. The main bar area kind of feel like your eccentric aunt's living room which is not in any way a bad thing. Concert venue downstairs. The beer has five cask and about six keg. The keg is reasonably reductase but the cask, while sessionable and trailditiinal, has some breweries I see less often such as Old Mill, Blackedge and Goose Eye. A good place to wile away a half hour or an afternoon.
