500ml bottle from Smaczek, Leicester. Mid- to dark brown, a little bit translucent with a little ring of buff/khaki head. Sweet aroma of honey and blackberries. Sweet taste, lots of honey and a little stewed fruit. The bitterness at the finish feels a little out of place. Light body, not a lot of carbonation. A wonderful find.

Large warehouse-like bar that used to be a Three Hills bar. It still sort of is, even though Three Hills don't brew anymore. At time of writing there are a few good Three Hills kegs and a smattering of bottles. Other beers include the ubiquitous UK crafties such as Azvex, Versant, Partizan and some Continentals like Chouffe. So no surprises but none are needed (at the moment anyway; I do wonder how good the selection will be when the Three Hills stuff is gone). They have food trucks, entertainment and other events like quizzes plus a wide screen for sport. Prices are fair.

Keg draught at the Way Station, Thrapston. Black, or very dark brown anyway, with almost no head. Aroma of sweet perfumed coconut, vanilla. Taste is more complex: it has the intense sweetness but it's drawn back by the competition of almost burnt malt. Toast, treacle. Small sips bring out the subtleties. Thick oily body with little carbonation. Not one of their best but still a very good stout.

Keg draught at the Way Station, Thrapston. Very light colour, almost straw. Clear with an small uneven white head and good lacing. Lemony aroma, notes of graining vanilla. Fresh taste with a yeasty character, sweet, more lemon. Light bitterness in the finish. Gentle body with medium carbonation. Not an overly exciting Helles but certainly competent.

Keg draught as Shoe in the Way Station, Thrapston. Reddish mid-brown with some haze to it. Small khaki head. Oaky aroma, some cherry. Sweet taste, woody and fruity, maybe a touch of strawberry. Lightest note of hunk. Light to medium body with heavy carbonation. Boy do I miss Three Hills.

Handpull cask at the Duke's Arms, Woodford near Thrapston Northants. Lighter side of gold and clear with a small white head. Lemony aroma, hay and weeds, toast. More of an English golde than and ESB maybe? Bittersweet taste, lemon rind and maybe a touch of white pepper. Bitterness in the finish is fairly full on. Light to medium body and soft carbonation. Not a great beer but being in near perfect condition probably helps.

Draught keg atvtbe Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Straw colour, clear with a ring of white head and good lacing. Big grapefruit with some spruce notes and a bit of orange. Taste is semi-sweet, a bit astringent with a more bitter finish. Light body with heavy carbonation. Not bad but not terrible keen.

Keg draught at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Mid-gold with a little bit of haze and a small white head. Grapefruit, orange, malty notes in the aroma. Sweet taste, lovely balance. Very malt forward in the mouth followed by loads of grapefruit hop. Simple yet complex, if you get me. Body on the thin side, medium carbonation. Lovely.

Draught keg at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Very light gold, almost straw. Hazy with a white ring of head & good lacing. Aroma of vanilla, cracked wheat, stone fruit. Sweet taste, more stone fruit and a nice biscuity malt base. Light-ish body with heavy, tight carbonation. As good as what I've come to expect from Azvex.
