Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a hazy golden straw with a sizable foamy off-white head, good lacing and medium carbonation. There’s floral hops, honey and biscuits in the aroma. In the mouth it is smooth, creamy and quite bitter but with a little underlying sweetness. There’s floral hops, citrus and malts in the flavour plus hints of ginger and herbs. Bitterness lasts into a decidedly dry finish. This is quite decent.

Cask at Pickled Pig, Stafford. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small scummy creamy head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly roasted malts and chocolate plus some hints of biscuits. In the mouth it is briefly sweet before becoming quite bitter. Flavours are initially roasted malts, liquorice and dark fruits plus some hoppy hints. Traces of alcoholic strength and black wine gums come through later leading to quite a dry finish. This is decent.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a hazy pale straw with minimal off-white head, good lacing and medium carbonation. The aroma is a right mix of fruits – berries, tropical and hedgerow. In the mouth it is quite bitter but with a little underlying sweetness. Flavour is mainly floral hops and grapefruit plus hints of stone fruit and generic citrus. Finish is dry and slightly sticky. Not really my kind of beer at all.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a medium sized frothy beige head. There’s roasted malts and smoke in the aroma, plus hints of wood and grapes. In the mouth it certainly has quite a bitter initial taste, but then sweetness comes through and the two fluctuate. Flavour is initially mixed fruits and roasted malts with some hoppy traces. Later the alcoholic strength becomes evident along with hints of smoke and chocolate. Finish is quite dry. Bit of an enigma this, it is certainly quite nice with plenty of depth to it, but is still disappointing compared with the original St Petersburg version.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours “bitter brown” with a small foamy off-white head and some lacing. The aroma has hops, caramel and a hint of cocoa. In the mouth there is a layer of sweetness on top, but the underlying bitterness is stronger and eventually wins out. Flavour is mainly floral hops, plus citrus and lemon with a little herbs and spicy hints later on. Finish is slightly spicy as well. This is reasonable.

Cask at Lych Gate, Wolverhampton. Pours a (very) dark reddish-brown with a small foamy tan head. There’s roasted malts and raisins in the aroma. In the mouth it is mostly sweet but with quite a bit of bitterness too. The flavour is quite simple but with plenty of depth to it. Chocolate is the mainstay but also roast malts and dried fruits, with hints of vanilla coming later. Finish is somewhat fruity. This is decent.

Cask at PACK, Wolverhampton. Pours a pale straw with a sizable almost white foamy head and excellent lacing. Not much of an aroma, just vague hints of hops and citrus. In the mouth it is basically bitter but with some underlying sweetness and sharp edges too. Flavour has floral hops and citrus, melon and mango with traces of tropical fruits later on. Finish is somewhat dry. This is reasonable.
