Bottle at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark mahogany with a small frothy cream head. There’s an aroma of dried fruit along with traces of alcoholic strength and ginger. In the mouth there is a bitter covering stretched over a sweet slightly viscous body. Plenty of variety in the flavour – hazelnuts, dark fruits, Belgian yeast, figs and hints of raisins and spice. Even some traces of soaked bread crusts later. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. This is nice – certainly hides its strength well !

On tap at Wigan Central. Pours a cloudy dark chestnut with minimal off-white head. Aroma has malts, cherries, musty oak barrels and malt whisky. In the mouth it is sweet and cloying with an overall flavour of woody corks and strong alcohol. There’s also plums, grapes and marmalade in the mix with a hint of chestnuts coming later. Finish is very boozy. This is excellent !

Cask at Wigan Central, Wigan. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small scummy tan head. There’s a fairly strong aroma of roasted malts, oats, honey and biscuits. In the mouth it is quite sweet with a creamy texture. Flavours are roasted malts, dark fruits and oats with hints of honey and chocolate coming later. Finish is quite fruity and slightly dry. This is rather nice – if a bit thin.

Cask at Moon under Water, Wigan. Pours a slightly hazy solid gold with a small foamy almost white head and excellent lacing. Is slow to settle but does so eventually. The aroma is mainly floral hops with hints of melon and passion fruit. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying bitterness. Flavour has floral hops, tropical fruit, citrus and oranges, with a hint of spice coming later. Finish is slightly dry. This is reasonable.

Cask at Moon under Water, Wigan. Pours golden brown with a sizable foamy off-white head and good lacing. There’s floral hops in the aroma plus some hints of autumn fruits. In the mouth it is definitely sweet at the start, but soon some bitterness can be detected which gradually increases. Underlying sharp hints as well. Flavour has malts, caramel and toast to start, with floral hops becoming evident later alongside hints of dried fruit and spice. Bitterness lasts into the slightly dry finish. This is decent.
