Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – just hints of tropical fruits. In the mouth it starts off slightly bitter with a creamy texture and this slowly increases. Flavours are tropical fruits, floral hops, mango and traces of lychee. Later some underlying malts and hints of sharpness can be detected, plus traces of melon. This is reasonable.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours very dark reddish-brown with a medium sized foamy tan head and some lacing. There’s roasted malts and milk chocolate in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and smooth with a creamy texture. Flavours are roasted malts, dark fruits and coffee grounds with some hints of grapes coming later. Some dryness in the finish. This is quite nice.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a medium sized frothy off-white head and excellent lacing. The aroma has roasted malts, treacle and biscuits. In the mouth it is slightly bitter from the start, but becomes increasingly more so. Flavours are roasted malts, toffee and parkin, with hints of chocolate and dark fruits coming later. Finish is quitev dry and fruity. This is decent.

Cask at Shrewsbury Hotel, Shrewsbury. Pours a slightly hazy “bitter brown” with a small scummy off-white head. The aroma has malts and caramel plus a hint off spice. In the mouth it is quite sweet and juicy but also slightly watery. Flavour has malts, hops, oranges and traces of nuts and autumn fruits. Finish is a little bitter. Not a bad beer but a bit bland. And I would call it a standard bitter rather than a brown ale.

Cask at Montgomerys Tower, Shrewsbury. Pours golden amber with a small scummy off-white head and excellent lacing. There’s malts, hops and blood oranges in the aroma. In the mouth it is difficult to decide whether sweetness or bitterness is more prominent. It is certainly quite juicy. Flavour has malts, toasts, and hints of caramel and peel. Some spices come through later leading to a slightly dry finish. This is quite nice – it grows on you.

Cask at Montgomerys Tower, Shrewsbury. Pours a solid ruby with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts with some fruity hints - plums and cherries. In the mouth it starts off sweet with a creamy texture but very quickly a little bitterness comes to the attention. Flavour is mainly red fruits with some underlying malts and hints of floral hops and spices. There’s more bitterness in the finish. This is decent.
