Cask at Old Vic, Preston. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s malts and dried fruit in the aroma plus some hints of butter. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with a little underlying bitterness. There’s lemongrass and malts in the flavour with traces of spice and caramel coming later. Finish is slightly dry. This is distinctly reasonable – and a grower.

On tap at Plau, Preston. Pours almost black with minimal beige head and good lacing. There’s roasted malts and coffee grounds in the aroma. In the mouth a brief initial sweetness quickly turns to coffee bitterness. Flavour has roasted malts, caramel and alcoholic strength with hints of vanilla and cocoa coming through later. Bitterness lasts into the slightly dry finish. This is decent.

On tap at Hops, Crewe. Pours a cloudy gold with minimal scummy off-white head and good lacing. There’s yeast, honey and malts in the aroma. In the mouth it is decidedly sweet and tangy with a creamy texture. Flavour is mixed hops, Belgian yeast, peanuts and lucozade with hints of honey, corn and a little bitterness coming later. Finish is slightly dry from the start and becomes increasingly more so. This is decent – though a little too sweet to be a top tripel.
