Bottleshare at Matteo’s. Can. Light haze on this deep amber beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy, semi dry and has modest carbonation. Very mild dark malts, mild tang. Little dark fruits. Light dry finish. Meantime’s description of this beer is everything it is not. No punchy hops, no complexity. Dear oh dear!

Can at home. Brown pour with bubbly offwhite head. Sweet roasted chocolate malts. Nutty roasty bitter. Some distant, not so strong hop aroma. Moderate sweet and slightly more bitter. About or under medium body, average carbonation. Watery yet malty, bit weird mouthfeel, like water with cocoa powder. Bitter but milky chocolate finish. A weak session IPA with a bunch of dark malt. It’s a bit strange.

Can from M&S. It pours darkest brown with a beige head. The aroma is sweet, sticky, malt - loaf, roasted malt, caramel, cola and rivita. The taste is sort of bitter, charred, ashy roast, coffee grounds, quite floral, metallic and peppery spice with a dry, toasty finish. Light + body and average carbonation. I’m not sure these flavours come together harmoniously... Not great.

Can from Marks&Spencer St Pancras and drunk on a train. Black beer lasting tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Like an black ipa. Its ok some chocolate. But its just not my thing. Either make a pale ale or a stout ok.

Can shared in London - thanks to Daniel. Pours clear red-brown with a creamy, tan head. Toasty bread in the nose, with a little citrus essence. Light sweet flavour with toasted leaves, brown bread, light toffee, cocoa, dried berries. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with mellow chocolate notes, wimpy roast, toasty brown bread, a little burnt pine. So so.
