Ne Goeien is Flemish for "A Good One." We’d like to think this beer is exactly that. When we invited Hildegard Van Ostaden from Urthel to come brew with us at Port Brewing, we hoped the collaboration of our brewers and her passion for brewing would result in one fine beer. A simple Saison styled beer with firm bitterness is all she requested. From the beginning, it was easy to imagine this beer as Ne Goeien all the way.

Pours deep hazy gold with straw edges and thin white head. The smell is fruity sweet with apples and pears to go along with spices and a bit of yeast. The taste is similar with mild tartness moving toward apricots, pears and grape fruity sweetness. There’s a background of growing tartness mixing with funk. Midway and to the finish I get rich sweet apples and mild spices. Smooth easy drinking brew.

courtesy of ibrew2or3. Pours hazy golden with thick white head. Aroma of citrus fruits, yeasty and brett. Taste yeasty, hoppy, citrus fruits, light spices - coriander - Not bad, just nothing special.

Thanks to bgramer for the bottle - pours a turbid gold, with a sudsy head that is quite lasting - tangy, citrus aroma, with a subtle wild character, and background peppery hops - very full in the mouth - slightly peppery up front, followed by a moderate wheaty tang and light phenols - a bit of orange through the middle - lingering citrus peel and herbal bitterness on the tail end - quite a nice, quaffable saison.

Moderate sized white head. Nice, cloudy yellow appearance that I expect from the style. Lots of yeast, brett, some barnyard, horseblanket character. A little sour. Good, solid saison.

Thanks to BeerHawk for sharing this one at decaturstevo’s 2008 Zapit Tasing Tasting. Hazy yellow with a lasting white head. Funky Belgian aroma . Sweet malts, flowery hops. The flavor is much what you expect from the aroma. Sweet, spritzy and a dry finish.

Bottle: Poured a medium yellow color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma consists of light funky yeast with a bready malt backbone. Taste is a mix between some a lightly sweet Belgian malt backbone with some slightly funky yeast notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no noticeable alcohol. Good but lacking some ester and character to bring this one to the next level.

Bottle at Monks Café, Philadelphia 17-11-08. I understand that this beer is a hook up between Tommer Arthur of Port Brewing and Lost Abbey fame and Hildegard from the Urthel Brewery in Holland. Pours orangey/light amber. This beer has a light farmhouse type nose is hoppy and tangy but blanketed under a soft sweet lemsipy lemonyness. There is some lovely unripe tangerine, pushy citrus and an everlasting long bitterness. It’s a bracingly dry saison A7 A4 F8 P4 OV16 3.9

Pours bright gold into a tulip. Fluffy bright white head recedes leaving spot lacing. Dusty aspirin aromas. Lemon and chalk upfront with a lasting pepper finish. Very nice.

Bottle from South Bay Drug. Hazy orange golden color with a fluffy, creamy off-white head. Aromas of mild spice, mild light fruits and mild funk. Medium body with foamy, creamy carbonation. Flavor is astringent spice, some coriander?, some funk. It is both sweet and lightly sour. It is both hoppy and funky. It is a masterpiece. I think there’s a touch of apricot in the finish. I could go on and on.

750 ml bottle courtesy of bvc. 2008 bottle. Opens with a pop. Pour is cloudy yellow white with a nice 1 inch pure white head. Nice full lacing left behind as the head retreats. Aroma of hay, grass, earthiness and Belgian yeastiness. Hops are present, nice nose. Taste is grainy wheat, with sharp bittering hops and nice lingering earthiness to the finish. Palate is medium, quite drinkable. Thanks for sending this one my way Brandon.
