Halia is a farmhouse ale aged in wine barrels with whole peaches, resulting in bright, effervescent fruit notes in a soft, hazy body that finishes slightly tart and sweet with the pleasant character of ripe, juicy peaches. Literally meaning “remembrance of a loved one” in Hawaiian, Halia was brewed in memory of the dear friend of one of our brewers who loved peaches.

Location: Sampled at Where the Wild Beers Are, 6/7/14
Aroma: The aroma is tart fruit, some funk, yeast, and some citrus and hop notes
Appearance: It pours a mostly gold color with a fizzy head and some lace
Flavor: The taste is also fairly tart and funky, some fruity sweetness, and a light bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, with a lively carbonation, and a long finish
Overall Impression: This is another interesting sour from Goose Island. Tasty stuff. Definitely something that is worth trying/drinking again.

Bouteille 75cl @ RBBSG III, courtesy of 77ships. Bottled on Aug 12th, 2013.

750 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBSG III. Personal contribution. Obtained in an IP trade with AdamJackson. Pours citrus lemonade, head fizzes away. Nose is very mellow & delicate, white wine (think chardonnay) mixed with mellow sweet peaches, nice mellow funk & brett. Taste is same, slightly sweet peaches, white wine, funk, hint lemongrass, flowers, lovely brett, very balanced, unique brett-profile. Very easy to drink, touch sweet white desert wine feel to it. Absolutely wonderful beer.

Hazy very pale, peach, touch of oak, and gooseberry. More gooseberry tartness, oaky, bit of minerally character. Earthy character, and has good balance.

Tasting at Matt’s
Hazy pale blond color. The aroma is quite nice but strange; fruity, lemony. Lean mouthfeel with evident lemony character, a bit peachy; spicy character too.
Very nice.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy light blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out light tart peaches, lots of lacto, and subtle white wine. Flavour brings out loads of lacto, lightly tart peaches, and a subtle wine hint. Loads of lacto, with residual peaches and nearly negligible wine barrels. Nearly as good as Gillian. Excellent.

Draught at Clybourn, 4/18/14
Lightly hazy soft gold body has a small white head that shows moderate retention.
Lactic acid and peaches in the nose are a match made in heaven. Deliciously cheesey, musty and all things lactic, with the peach brightening things and playing perfect foil to the reserved lactic notes. Some light wood tannins and brett notes round things out, with a strong aroma overall, but no parts being overdone and no alcohol or flaws noted.
The flavor is wonderfully full of peach but it’s an authentic fruit flavor, no syrupiness here. Lactic notes arent as strong in flavor as the nose would suggest, being somewhat supplemented by light malt sweetness, brett acids and some wood dryness. The body may be the best part, being very supple and substantive but nowhere near underattenuated. This is probably the best barrel sour I’ve had from them yet. Not just a glass of sour cherry juice, as Madame Rose was, and probably a little more balanced and drinkable than Lolita. Fleur and Sophie are both delicious in their own right and I havent had Juliet. All in all, GI does a phenomenal job with these and while they’re a bit price-prohibitive for everyday drinking, I certainly would if I could.
