Bottle, 2014 Vintage. Cloudy dark amber-red with a thin head. Has a notable strength behind a rich sweetened fruitiness, evident in both aroma and taste.

500ml bottle from Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours a dark mahogany with a good off-white head. Aroma is nutty autumnal malts. Taste is rather earthy with some dark fruits, nutty malts, oak and stronger sweet barley wine echoes. Body is rather thin and weak with a drying finish. Lacks a bit of oomph.

2014 bottle (blended with "a portion of bourbon barrel aged wheat wine", according to the label). Deep clear copper with a coat of beige head. Aroma of singed toffee, sherry, whisky, mace, vanilla. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Fruit and toffee, dries out at the end where there is still strong bitterness and a little overt alcohol. Some oak and vanilla, a little chocolate. Dry and bitter enough that if the malt’s sagging much at all I can’t tell. A few months past best before - happy to try a fresh one, happy to go another year or two older. A beer for cheese and crackers.

Bottle from Saucy Pears. Appearance - murky orange brown. Thin head. Nose - wholemeal toast with marmalade. Taste - orangey, nutty and biscuity. Light caramel background. Light booze. Palate - medium bodied with a tangy yet somehow drying texture and a long dry yet somehow a little sweet finish. Overall - I think this fits better into the ESB style.
