Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours a dark amber with a slight haze and an off-white head. Sweet malt aroma with a little phenols. Solid body, heavy caramel and some overripe fruit with a little fruitiness. Warming alcohol finish. 150311

On tap at the White Horse, Parsons Green. Cloudy brown beer with a tiny white head. Soft creamy palate but has a mild carbonated bite (my favourite type of palate!). Rich malt - porty almost. Toffee and chocolate tones and some tangy fruit in the undertone. Finishes dry and creamy. All the elements come together beautifully. Delicious and spot on but felt like a strong Belgian more than a Scotch Ale. Who cares? Great beer and probably the best Australian beer I’ve had and that includes a great pint of Fosters from one of the first barrel imports in 1980 ....

Tap at the White Horse Pub, London. Pours an opaque, amber-brown with a soft, filmy head. Loads of rich, dynamic malts in the nose, with toffee, caramel and ripe fruits such as cherry and plum. Very sweet flavor, tons of sugar, toffee, brown sugar, caramel, ripe and dark fruits, including fig and raisin. Also has an understated bitterness, herbal and citrusy. Full in body with fine carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel and warming alcohol. Has lingering sweetness and booze in the finish, with some toasted malts and chocolate. Great beer.

Bottle. Cloudy deep caramel with a beige coat for a head. Dark fruit, singed malt and alcohol nose. Sweet, plummy taste. There’s a little portiness, but it’s not of terribly good port. Soft carbonation lightens the palate considerably, along with some citric/ spicy hops. Very nice drop.Rather more bitterness and a drier finish in this than previously.

On-tap at beer deluxe. Dark brown with hints of ruby, and a thick creamy light-brown head.Aromas leap out of the glass, with grapes, straweberry jam, bubblegum, citrus notes, dates, very perfumy and vinuous. Could go on forever.More grapes from the taste, as well as some toasted malt, rolled oats, passionfruit, and a decent bitter backing.Mouthfeel is very rich and thick, with a well-suited mild carbonation. Wouldn’t want too many of these in a row, so heavy.Bottled version is no where near as good, there’s less depth, less fruit, and the alcohol isn’t tamed

Bottle. Poured muddy brown with no head. Pleasant but not very pronounced caramel aroma. Full bodied, creamy palate with light carbonation. Malty caramel initial taste with a hint of pears transforming to a rather too bitter burnt caramel finish with a hint of dark chocolate. I expected a lot more, so was disappointed. It’s OK, but it lacks finesse. [Two years on, I had another bottle: I appreciated it much more. However I have not changed my original scores. The appearance was clear this time and the taste was more appealling.]

Bottle at London Gathering Nov 2005. Nice deep chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Nice hoppy, raisiny aroma and intense hop. Good choc malt in mouth. Intense hop/grapefruit on end. Good beer, could have drunk more of this

2003 bottle. Thank you Mutant, but after trying this stuff I wish I would have traded for more of it!! The aroma is in a class of its own as far as scottish ales go. Hell, the aroma is in a class of its own as far as most aromas go. Intense, permeating, and just marvelous. Big huge winey prunes in the background. Tons of sweet caramel and English toffee. Sticky, chewy and almost so big you can chew on the aroma. Dark fudge is in there, and something Scottish. Is it peat? perhaps, but it is just fantastic. Pour is a murky drab olive brown with a small off-white head. Mostly clear. Flavor delivers big time. Huge sweet caramel and toffee flavors, with a bittersweet, salty peat flavor and some hints of single malt. Body is full, mouthfeel is chewy and delightful. Low carbonation. Finish has a bit more dryness on it, some earthiness and a hint of roast. This is one of the best English toffee flavors I’ve tasted in a beer. It’s definitely a slow sipper, as it gets powerful towards the end from all of the malt sweetness. Incredible treat, one I wasnt expecting. Can’t wait for the SuperShine. Oh ya, I had this out of a snifter, which really showcases the marvelous aroma.

Sparkling amber. Aroma shows toffee, cocoa, coffee and alcohol. Toffeeish malt dominates - sweet and sugary. Good but could do with a bit more dryness.
