Flanders red is inspired by the great ‘Burgundies of Belgium’. A rich complex beer, deep in red colour and fermented with a Roselare yeast strain. This special release spent 40 months in barrels prior to blending.

Slightly hazy reddish brown beer, creamy off-white head, little stable. Aroma: fruity, red currants, lactobaccilus, funky, earthy, caramel, bit sweet, smoky touch? MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sour start, funky, wood tannins, little bitter. Aftertaste: funky, soft bitterness, lactobacillus, bit fruity, sourish. Ok beer!

Tap at Borefts. Slight hazy reddish brown with long lasting off white head. Overripe fruit, light dried apricot, lots of funk, dank cellar, yoghurt, oily malts. Sweet sour and bitter in almost equal parts. Medium bodied with creamy feel. Nice.

Keg @ Birmingham Beer Bash 2015. Pours a murky reddish brown. Lacks an initial sour zing and no balsamic flanders elements coming into play. The finish warms into a nice sour vinous oakiness but seems to lack the balance and complexity of its Belgian counterparts.

Bottle. Deep, orangey amber, with a light haze. Barely a head. Spicy biscuit malts. Sour cherry fruits. Some red wine vinegar. Sweet balsamic. Some oak. Vanilla pod. Taste is light dry. Palate is slick, and a bit greasy. Very soft carbonation. Some vinegar tartness. Finishes tart and dry. Decent, though the palate is a bit oily and slick. Needs crisping and tarting up. Perhaps a year down the cellar would do just that?

Earl Of Essex. Keg. Hazy amber beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Palate is light, dry and crispy. Minerals. Mildly tart cherry and citric peel, a little balsamic. A modest savoury vibe. Comes together well, quite a light Sour Red/Brown.

Keg at the Earl of Essex. Reddy amber coloured pour with a halo of grey head Aroma is sour, light vinegar, malt vinegar, flavour is composed of light caramel, toffee apple, musty, malt vinegar. Palate is sweet and sour, moderate carbonation. Woody and a bit of vanilla.

On tap at Bottle Shop London . Clear red orange. Apple sour aroma. Some lactic. Some toffee biscuit in the mouth. Decent biscuit rather good. Just that lactic thing. Great biscuit.

(Draught at Craft Beer Co Covent Garden, London, 26 Apr 2015) Red colour, slightly hazy, with brief off-white head. Fruity, sourish nose with red berries, raspberries and a touch of vinegar. Fruity, tart taste with notes of red berries, raspberries, red-currant and a sweet and sour finish. Not quite as much vinegar taste as expected from the aroma. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Not really as complex as Rodenbach, but still quite nice.

Keg at the Earl of Essex, 14/05/15. Reddish amber topped with a decent crimson swirl. Nose is tarte red berry, cherry skins, wood must, damp hay, acidic notes, funk. Taste comprises tarte raspberry, grape skins, wood must, straw, vanilla essence, red berry balsam. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid flavoursome red, balanced acidity, moderate puckering close, good all round depth and balance.
