11th Jan 2014 and my pub crawl takes me to The Lion at Edgmond (Shropshire) and to my surprise an old friend is on the bar: good old Rosey Nosey. I’ve drank this in cask form at various pubs over the years but only rated the bottled version for some reason until now. My hand-pulled pint looked good, clear, dark brown with a ruby hue, slightly off-white head of semi-deep foam. Aroma is like a Christmas pudding, caramel and cinnamon notes giving it a fairly sweet smell. Taste wise it has a hop front with malted biscuits and dark winter fruits coming through the fairly start , this is a complicated, well made brew and one I like to try every year if possible.

Cask at the Rose & Crown, High Wycombe. Pours a red-brown with a small off-white head. Dry red wine dominates, with some caramel, sour cherry and dusty wardrobes coming through. I can’t believe it- it’s a Bateman’s beer that I actually like. I didn’t know they had it in them!

Nut brown, clear, dense white head, good lacing
Aroma - Caramel toffee malts, soft minerals, slight sulphur
Taste of caramel malts, some burnt toffee, fruity malts, some yeast, hedgerow english hops, dab of minerals, definite dark English ale
Palate - Medium body, fairly smooth. Finish as main flavour, moderate bitter linger and a touch of bitter roast
Overall - One of the best Bateman’s beers I’ve had - helped that it was fresh and in crackin’ condition

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours clear, vibrant copper-red with a tight, yellow-white foam cap. Aroma is fairly weak but does have some ripe fruits. Flavor is medium sweet, with thick dough and ripe, Christmas fruits. There is some yeast and grape. Medium bodied with fine, smooth carbonation. Quite chewy. Lightly sticky finish, some toasted sugars, dough, berries and grapes. Not bad, but pretty average stuff.
