Bottle shared with Mes, Harry, Duff et al in London. I believe, Harry, that Mes provided this one (I brought the Hill Farmstead). Pours black-brown with a foamy, beige head. Ripe fruit nose, charry roast, dirt, earth. Big sweet flavor, some boozy chocolate, prunes, raisins, a bit of alcohol sting and some mild, earthy bitterness. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm finish with baking cocoa, mild prunes. Lasting light, dry cocoa. Nice. Not overly sweet.

Bottle: Poured a deep dark burgundy brown color ale with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of pine and astringent hops with notes of caramel malt with some toffee notes. Taste is a complex mix between some pine and astringent hops with some sweet malt notes with some caramel and toffee notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting though not something I would feel the need to drink on a regular basis.

Courtesy of Dallas. Pours a nice looking mahogany with tan head. The aroma offers up roasted malts, molasses, some chocolate notes, some spicy black licorice followed by a bit more chocolate. The taste has the same general notes but with a modest tart sense too. The mild tartness and roasted malts, molasses, spicy black licorice and chocolate all blend and mix nicely. Nice brew.

750 ml bottle into oversized wine glass. Pours clear dark brown color with a huge 3 finger light tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a fairly thick lacing cap that lasts. Nice thick lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of caramel, bread, roasted malt, chocolate, orange, and pine. Nice complex and hoppy aromas. Taste of big chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, orange, and pine. Decent amount of bitterness present on the finish; with lingering notes of orange, chocolate, and roasted flavors. Medium carbonation and full bodied. Nice creamy mouthfeel and smooth drinkability for the alcohol level. No alcohol in the taste and a fair amount of warming present on the finish. Overall, a delicious black ale. Tons of flavor and complexity with easy drinkability for the alcohol level.

750ml pours a nearly opaque, deep brown with a creamy, off white head. Smells chocolatey, lightly hoppy, malty, light coffee. Flavor is chocolate, light spice, brown sugar, sweet, malty, light coffee with cream. Medium bodied, spicy finish.

On tap at Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn. It pours near black with a ruby tint and a thin beige head. The nose is charcoal, caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, chocolate brownie, cherry, soy sauce and sesame seed. The taste is charcoal, toast, smoke, soy sauce, rich-roast coffee, cherry, toasted sesame seed, molasses and burnt sugar. It’s an interesting American Strong, but a bit too much charcoal for me.
