Bretty, subtle fruit, very oaky and earthy also. Medium bitterness, funky finish, grasses and fruit. Hints of smoke and earthy vanilla, complex and easily drinking.

Hazy muddy amber color with no head. Dried peaches and mangoes on top of a dry, mildly tart and horse blanket. Very low carbonation, the oak and tartness aren’t that well integrated and hop character doesn’t shine. Very mediocre.

A golden amber ale with a thin white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with light banana esters, light peated notes, light Brett, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with light peated notes, light mineral notes, light cherries, very nice. On tap at Lupulus.

Bottle: Poured a hazy bright amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of complex Brett notes with light fruity undertones, some tart notes and oak presence is quite nice. Taste is a mix of fruity Brett notes with some dry oak notes with some tart notes with some malt presence that is detectable. Body is fuller then average with great carbonation. Another solid creation from Oxbow with great balanced of Brett notes.

Bottle drunk 5/26/17.
Bright, cherry-accented auburn-copper body shows good clarity and a medium-sized, fairly rapidly-dissipating beige head.
Very fruity nose shows boisterous esters giving off rather intense, but enjoyable, strawberry and cherry notes with light acetic and strong Brett undertones. Only a touch of very dry woodsmoke and it works nicely here, as I think any very heavy, meaty, campfire smokiness would clash and overwhelm in concert with the bright fruitiness. Light graham cracker and biscuit-like malts behind it with just a touch of honey and pepper lingering on the finish. No alcohol or flaw.
Soft in the mouth with a good balance of both specialty and base malt character leading to some dryness and woody character but also soft honey-like notes. Juicy cherry and marmalade-like citrus emanate from the interplay of Brett and acetic acid, while overall acidity is pretty low, though a solid tartness lingers on the finish, keeping things bright and crisp. Great balance and integration with the malt. Low barrel character but with light tannin adding structure to the body. Carbonation is low but engaging and overall attenuation is high. Lovely stuff. Really like the bright fruitiness here.

At LIBF, a ’versnijbier’ referred to by the brewer as a ’bière de mars’, referring to an old tradition in the northwestern corner of France and best described as a pale, light (usually around 5% ABV) variant on bière de garde, presented by the local breweries in spring and intended as a fresh thirst quencher - something altogether very different from the bottom-fermenting German Märzen tradition. Some Belgian brewers (especially in the south of the country) have imitated this local tradition in the past, but apart from Contreras’ Mars Especial I cannot name any of them surviving to this day. Anyway, this one is atypical in using smoked malt and being partially barrel aged, sparking my curiosity. Egg-white, lacing, moussy head, hazy orangey peach blonde robe. Aroma of sour white grapes, peach, apple peel, soap, some wet wood, hay, dry sherry - but very subtle in terms of smoke, and in fact not reminiscent of a traditional French bière de mars at all. Fruity, bit estery onset, sweetish pear core but superseded by tart unripe green plum and grape peel flavours, even a lemony acidic touch for a brief moment, drying the palate over a softly carbonated, nicely rounded, bready malt core; light woodiness is added in the finish, accentuating the drying tartness and matching well with it, rather than imposing heavy oak flavours to the whole but still establishing a sherry-ish finish with an earthy hop touch buried underneath. Again the smoke remains very, very subtle, apart perhaps from a vague touch of smoked hay retronasally. Interesting modern Anglo-Saxon ’farmhouse ale’ interpretation, complex and refreshing, but not a typical bière de mars in any kind of way.

750 ml. bottle sampled @ LIBF 2017. Thank you for sharing RB-InBev Belgian crew! Clear orange golden, small white head. Nose is interesting brett, funky with sour oak, orange funk. Taste is sour lemon juice, oak, weirdly funky, dirty rusty but not too heavily so. Body is basic sour. Tad simple but quite tasty, didn’t really get the smoke.
