"Can you fill these empty barrels with something fun?" That was the challenge Kjetil presented me with over a coffee a stormy Tuesday morning in October."How about something strong and dark?" I wondered. "25% dark malts, 30% rye, 28 degres Plato."That’ll never work." said Kjetil. 1 kilo malts/L, 48 hours of brewing and 2 years on old Armanac barrels later, I feel free to say: "Well, wouldn’t you know... it worked".

Bottle. Black oily pour, small brown head, beautiful. Full aroma of chocolate, boozy red fruit and some licorice. Rich taste of chocolate, coffee, dark cacao, rye, boozy red fruit of the armagnac, subtle bitters and a smooth roastedness. Long warming glowing finish. Absolutely fantastic.

Black and oily. Aroma has some liquorice and some boozy armanac sweetness too. Rich and warming and slightly sticky. The brandy/armanac sweetness is quite prominent. Relatively low bitterness.

Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Palate is airy and smooth. Modest fine carbonation. Smooth rich dark malts, nice dark malt cream. A little tang. Good dark chocolate and a little fruity brandy. Fruit liqueur. Smooth finish. Nice.

Room temperature. 330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Caigny. Bottle says brewed on 05.11.2012 but not sure my lack of Norwegian. Light dark ruby black, big thick very dark mocha head. Nose is thick cooked umami, things cooked to the pan, liquorish, very thick mocha, liquorish sweetish, burned sugar,… Taste is thick umami liquorish, very syrupy, light molasses, huge thickness, very thick bitter syrup, light warming quality spirit, long lingering bitterness in your mouth, thick roasted syrup, light wood, light boozy red grape peel, ………….. No signs of oxidation,…. Chocolate becomes clearer the more your palate becomes adjusted to it,….. Not sure if I have ever had a beer quite as vicious as this or one that tasted like it had been cooked for as long as this one,…. Too bad ‘though that I didn’t pick up one the tarragon safe for perhaps by the power of suggestion. Fascinating beer.
