Saddle Black is our gnarly black beer using Pilgrim, Chinook and Cascade hops to help give a full smoky and citrus aroma. The roasted malts used to craft this full flavoured black beer will give a taste of chocolate and espresso, whilst the use the of smoked malt gives saddle black a well-rounded finish. With aromas are a mix of black pepper, deep fruits, orange and spices. The mouthfeel is full bodied and complex with a lingering bitter finish. IBU 65.

Cask (William Jameson JDW, Sunderland) - Dark brown with red tinges. Roasted malt, soapy hops and a hint of liquorice in the aroma. Hoppy and slightly roasted taste with soapy hops, fudge and liquorice in the taste. Quite nice.

Hand-pulled half-pint in Montgomery’s Tower (Wetherspoons), Shrewsbury on 28th April 2014. Ruby red, leaning towards black: the tan coloured head gave some heavy and impressive lacing. Malts rule the roost completely, roasted, toasted and baked for all I know. Sweet, yet dry and bitter also: a complex and interesting brew. Another very good beer from this brewery.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Deep mahogany with a tight beige head; aroma of richly roasted malts with some damsons and a touch of chocolate; smooth, fruity, taste; with a dry lingering fruity finish with some spice and coffee. A very satisfying ale.

Cask handpull at Metropolitan Spoons Baker Street. Very dark brown beer thin collar of bubbles. Powdery coffee and chocolate. Not sure the lime and Grapefruit hop goes with the rest of the beer. A little but of tobacco in there. It’s ok but not my thing. Leather and tobacco like a heavy tannin red wine.

Cask at Victoria Station Spooneria, 02/04/14, JDW Spring 2014 Fest Beer #17. Mahogany brown with a well appointed tan head that retains well, some lacing ensues. Nose is biscuit, earthy hop, dark berry fruit, lightly charred aroma. Taste comprises a subtle pine twang, jammy berry fruit, light cocoa, hint of smoke, gentle Ribena berries. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying closure. Tidy enough CDA.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Cask. Clear deep brown beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, light fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, tiny bit of roasty bitterness. Pleasantly tangy dark fruits with a distinct Coca Cola like tone. Light hop bitterness and spice beforea dry finish. Hangs together well and is a tasty number.

Cask at Back of Beyond, Reading. Dark brown with a middling creamy head. A little melon and grapefruit up front then bitter pine kicks in. Chocolate and cola come through but overall it’s maybe a little too bitter to allow the full flavour of the hops to shine through. Not bad though.

Cask at the Victoria Station Spoons - London. Pours dark, caramel-brown with a thick, fluffy khaki head. The nose receives dark toasted bread, burnt leaves, slight pine. Light-medium sweet flavor with decent roasted malt character, some oily pine, nips of cocoa. Medium bodied with fine carbonation; nicely conditioned. Lightly resinous on the finish with more well-toasted brown bread, earth, dirty pine, cocoa. Not a bad mid-level CDA.
