Postman's Knock is a beer offering an intelligent blend of complex ingredients, the rich brown beer with a smooth fine head has a very chocolately character. The combination of subtle flavour notes of vanilla, treacle and roast malt gives an initial rich sweetness leading to a velvety chocolate finish.
The beer is named in honour of Simon Evans (1895-1940), a novelist and short story writer, who settled in Cleobury Mortimer after World War One. He had been badly affected by poison gas in the war and, in order to improve his health, worked as a postman, walking up to 18 miles a day. Postman's Knock is based on the Champion Mild recipe and uses the finest malting barley, Maris Otter and Worcestershire Fuggles and Goldings hops.
Bottle Notes - Postman's Knock is a bottle conditioned beer which contains sediment, pour carefully and best stored upright at cellar temperature 10 - 12 degrees.

500 ml bottle conditioned, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.8%. The main label calls the beer a "rich ruby porter", while a side label calls it a "strong mild". Whatever - it is a decent beer anyway. Mahogany coloured beer, clear first, hazy when the yeast is poured in the end. Low beige head. Moderate natural carbonation. Malty aroma and flavour with mild roasty notes, hints of ripe berries, chocolate and mild coffee. Not very sweet, a moderate bitterness in the finish. Not bad, and "very English".

Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin white head. Big malty aroma with hints of citrus. Lots of malt in the flavour with hints of vanilla. You could almost chew this beer! There is almost no bitterness and the finish is very smooth. This is an excellent beer that would be perfect for a session.

ChrisO ’Night Of The Gaylords’ tasting. Hazy dark brown beer. Some light malt - toffee. Not much else going on apart from a little hop bitterness.

My original review was of a bottle: I had it in cask form during Dec 2011: lovely and even better than the bottled version in my opinion. Brown bottle conditioned real ale, best before 23 Jan 2008, drank on 28 Apr 2007. This beer is a celebration of the life and times of Simon Evans (1895-1940). Badly effected by poisonuos gas in WW1, he settled in Cleobury Mortimer, becoming a postman, he walked 18 miles a day on his round; a novelist and short story writer, he wrote about the villages and the people he met on his daily walk. The beer is produced with the following ingrediants: Maris Otter Pale Ale Malted Barley, Dark Crystal Malt, Pale Chocolate Malt and Wheat, Yeast, Salt, Vanilla, Positive caramel (E150c). The hops used are Worestershire Fuggles and Goldings. Poured into a pint sleeve glass. Ruby Red, clear and interesting, no head, just a wisp of an off white scum around the glass, pity, I like to see a full head on a beer. The chocolate malts and caramel dominate the aroma, with burnt toast adding to the smell. Bournville dark chocolate flavour, but slightly burnt malts too, I was expecting more of a tang to it. Smooth and easy mouthfeel, not overly clingy, but the flavours stay in the mouth. All in all, a very good bottle of beer, I have one more left, I intend to stack it away for next winter and bring it out on a cold evening by the fire.

Bottle. Reddish black beer with a small soon disappearing head. The aroma is gently malty and roasted, and the flavour is roasted with a good bitter finish. Overall a nice porter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tawny, golden. The aroma is caramelly and a little bit nutty. Taste is ok, kind of bland and metallic. A bit nutty at the end.

Bottle shared with Lyoli. Pours light brown, semi-clear, with a fading beige head. Cocoa malts on the nose. Decent flavor, lightly roasty with some coffee, mocha notes, and some leafy, astringent bitterness. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Dry finish, lightly sweet with some faint tobacco, mocha and bread, with some roasty bitterness. Good stuff.
