At the request of the “Foundation Abbey, Town and Region” and the Town of Sint-Truiden, a special abbey beer was brewed on the occasion of the first open abbey days in 2002. What makes Adelardus Dubbel so special, is the use of so-called ‘gruut’. This is a mixture of about 10 different indigenous herbs. Further five types of malts and two types of Belgian hops are used. Adelardus Dubbel is a dark brown high fermentation beer, that is unfiltered, unpasteurized with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Adelardus Dubbel has a full taste with a very soft, spicy nose and a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Deep brown colour with thick soapy head. Aroma is very sweet with some sugary fruit tones. The soft malty flavours are pleasant but it’s a bit too sweet overall.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 13 Jan 2009) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with dried fruit, prunes, raisins, chocolate and hints of herbs. Fruity, malty taste with notes of dried fruit, prunes and a slightly spicy and herbal, bittersweet finish. Great balance. Medium body, balanced sweetness throughout. Very nice beer.

Bright reddish-brown. Molasses-toffee aroma is simple but tasty. Soft body has nice toffee notes and a light chewiness. Smooth, easy drinking example.

Bottle @ Plan B, Copenhagen. BB 08/08. Pours dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is dusty malty, yeasty & very vinous. Plum & port. Smooth & soft - nearly no carbonation. Round, mild & sippable. Well aged!

Bottle picked up from Ken Sheathers Wines, Cheltenham, 22-12-07 Pours a very dark, muddy murky brown. Wonderful flavours of dark molasses (also present on the nose), plenty of sweet malts and even a chocolatey creaminess in there. I really liked this. A7 A3 F8 P4 Ov17 3.9 Had this again Dad picked this up at Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Gent, Belgium Feb 10, consumed 19-03-10 Pours dark brown. Once again quite a murky beer, there is indeed plenty of dark sugars in this (this is about all I got!) and its also very malty but unlike last time I was less impressed, its fine but no 3.9 I’m afraid. Bottle. (thx for sharing, papsoe.) Hazy, reddish brown pour. Nice, dense, beige head on top. Roasted and sweetish nose with some butterscotch. The butterscotch is evident all the way, but not ruining the beer. The flavor is sweet and slightly roasted as well, finishing with some toffee-ish flavors. Medium, slightly sticky mouthfeel. It is too buttery, but quite nice anyway. Rating: 5-4-6-3-12-3. 071006

Bottle. It’s a slightly unclear, brown beer topped by an off-white to beige head of moderate size. Some cellar, alcohol and nuttyness on the roasted nose. Something herbal too. Tea, perfume, herbs, caramel and bitterness in the flavor. Medium to full body, nicely carbonated and quite dry. Perfumed, herbal finish with caramel and roasted malts. Overall, too perfumed for my likings, but nice in a way. 110501

Bottle: Poued a dark brown/black with light brown head. The aroma was a sweet spice, but had a bit of sour metallic tones too. The flavor was very sweet candy malt tasting.
