Lodewijk Swinkels usually brews at La Trappe Brewery – the only Trappist brewery in the Netherlands. He has travelled to Marston’s Brewery, in Staffordshire, to create this beer especially for this [March-April 2011] Wetherspoon real-ale festival. He has based this beer on a 1930s English strong ale recipe, then added his own touches to create an interesting cross-over, with a floral hop character and full-bodied flavour, with hints of caramel.

Cask at one of the Manchester Wetherspoons back in 2011. Notes from that time only say weak bodied and lacks flavour.

JDW Fest. Clear amber beer, little white head. Dryish palate. Unusual flavour! There is a milky nutty sweetness going on that reminds me of spirit made in Europe somewhere - can’t put my finger on it! A little floral hop as well before the dry finish. Funky flavour, overdry palate.

[Cask at Monk’s Retreat (JDW), Reading] Amber, slight white head. Sweet caramel at first. Soft, comforting mouthfeel in the middle, and a finish like chewing on a lump of wood. Not a lot to this one, but pleasant enough.

Cask at the Claude de Vall (JDW), Camberley. Hazy amber with a ring of white head that laces the glass nicely; grainy aroma with a touch of apple; the taste is predominantly of caramel malts, but there are also some sour apple notes; before a fruity finish with some pleasantly spicy hops. Very drinkable.

Full pint, hand pulled cask at JDWs Flying Horse, airside Gatwick airport. Near-clear amber body. Just a ring of small dimples to the rim of the glass. Mild smell of dried fruity hops. The taste profile is marmalade- like, supported by spicy notes. Bittering hops to the ending, still a bit on the sweet side. (Gatwick, 22.03.2011).

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW. Hazy, light brown with a faint film. Yeasty nose, bit of caramel and candi sugar. Pretty sweet, malty, touches of caramel and sugar, light sweat, very light grass. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Finishes sweet, more caramel, mild warmth. Not bad.

Cask handpull at Penderels Oak JDW Holborn. Clear amber colour lasting beige head. English yeast some hop presence. Some hop sting on finish. Its a English strong bitter. Fine but really dull Englush beer. Where is the Dutch influence here? fine if uninspiring
