Cask at JDW Edgware Road. Pour opaque, ruby-brown with a slight, beige head. Incredible dark espresso bean aroma. More punget than any beer I can think of. But there are also hints of sweetness, giving the impression of coffee ice cream. The flavor, though, is not quite as appealing to me. Has some faint malty sweetness, but some kind of sour-ish coffee character prevails. Not very bitter. Light to medium in body with flat carbonation. The finish is not as intense as I would expect. There is some light, lingering coffee flavor but ver little roastiness. Great start but downhill from there.

Cask at the Gig House (JDW) , Wokingham. Pitch black with a thin tan head - a perfect looking stout; espresso coffee aroma; strong coffee dominates the flavour too, both dry and sweet, but there are also definite hints of the oats in the somewhat chewy texture; the finish is dry with more oats and coffee, but doesn’t quite satisfy. An excellent coffee stout, but slightly too sweet for me.

Cask, handpull at The Standing Order, JDW, Edinburgh, with Craig, Rob (Rob’s mate) Jan, Charlotte & Loz, 29.10.10 Never took any notes with this so (busy table) I’m having to mentally recollect this one. This had an incredible nose bit like Baileys or Kahlua really impressive coffee but laced with cream. Taste was something of a disappointment, I could have sniffed it all day but can’t say the same about drinking it, this was thin with watery coffee, lacking body but still fine enough. Cask handpull at Thomas Ingoldsby, JDW, Canterbury. Never one to be adverse to go against the grain here. Black colour. Lasting dark beige head. Coffee, like a coffee chocolate from a chocolate box. Or coffee cake or coffee icing on a coffee cake. It’s not a double espresso more like a capuccino and I don’t like milk in my coffee. It’s no Weasel. To be honest half way through the pint I was sick of it. Eventually had to stick some bourbon in it otherwise it was pretty much undrinkable. Better with the bourbon, but still not my thing.

Spoons Fest! Clear dark brown beer with a residual suddy white head. Low carbonation. Strong nose of freshly brewed coffee and a little chocolate and vanilla too. Light dry palate. Taste follows the nose - rich coffee but not bitter. A vanilla sweetness creeps in and the some sweetish chocolate coffee mocha and a hint of orangey hop. Minerally finish, more coffee and some very late fruit. Though this was going to be hard work but it turned out (in street racing terms) to be a bit of a sleeper!

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol 30/10/10. Jet black with a hint of a tan head. Big black coffee and charred malts aroma. Flavour was similar, with some dark chocolate and long, dry finish. Very good.
