Obscure is a dark, hoppy strong ale with a complex malt blend giving an intricate aroma. It’s definitely not your obvious beer.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pourish a pretty dark reddish brown with a small off-white head and good lacing. Malts and berries in the nose, but only a lsight aroma overall. Dark fruit and malts are the main sensations in the mouth, but there are also flavours of humbug sweets, traditional hops and traces of spices. Quite sweet overall though. Nice and very drinkable for it’s strength.

500ml bottle; BBE Nov 18. Poured into a large glass tankard at home on 21st Aug 18. Very dark body, in fact it's black, with a deep red hue around the edges, the head a tanned foaming blanket of smooth bubbles. The nose is half malty, half red berries, the taste similar in make up, the malts giving a slight chocolate leaning to the smooth body feel, nice.

Bottle from Corks Out, Heswall. Deep Amber brown colour with a very thin tan head. Aroma is stewed dark fruit, and pomegranate molasses. Taste starts sweet, but has a real depth. Great!

Bottle from Corks Out, Chester. Very dark brown with not much of a head. Has fine smooth malts with a very light roasted aroma and taste, a touch soapy, but still very tasty with a light milky sweetness throughout.

Cask at The Grapes - Liverpool. Pours rich, clear amber-brown with a tight, creamy cappucino head. Great aroma with notes of fruitcake, faint cocoa, rich bread, dark berries. Medium sweet flavor with rich, ripe and gooey fruit character, some plums and figs, sugary toffee, dark bread. Medium bodied with fine carbonation; great condition. Sticky sweet finish with toasted sugars, demerara, more fruitcake, candied dark fruits, ripe berries. Nicely balanced overall with restrained, layered complexity.

Bottle. Nose is very sweet, notes of milky coffee, vanilla and fudge. Taste is sweet, with suprisingly pronounced hops. Taste is of ash, slight pepper, some molassus, dark fruits, leading to an IPA like finish with with medicine. Slightly too carbonated. A nice beer, but the nose and palate, don’t seem to relate to one another that well leaving a disjointed experience.

50cl bottle from the Tatton estate shop. Deep chestnut with a dense beige head, thick at first, but settling to a thin scum; rich earthy aroma with malts and molasses; soft, with a bitter, woody, smokey flavour; and a dry finish. I was expecting something far sweeter, but this is a pleasant surprise.
